About Alexander

Hi there! I've been tutoring for over ten years, and have a real passion for helping students succeed.

My tutoring philosophy comes from a place of humility; for example, I raised my LSAT score on my own by 20 points from my baseline test score. I firmly believe in the potential of problem-solving and teamwork, and I'm ready to work one-on-one with students to help them achieve their goals.

I believe in client service, combined with a demonstrated exposure to tutoring methods. After four years of undergraduate work, and three years of law school, I've had almost every grammatical nuance of English pounded into my head, willingly or not. A law degree is almost like a technical writing degree. I'm a precision guy; I find errors in Supreme Court briefs.

My former students have attended and graduated from top undergraduate and graduate schools, including UCLA and USC. A majority of the students that I have worked with have demonstrated learning disabilities, and I have assisted those students in maximizing performance, both in the classroom and in standardized exams.

In high school, I was a part of the International Baccalaureate program, which combined a rigorous college-prep-oriented curriculum with a sustained international focus.

During this time, I operated a computer tutoring and repair business with folks aged 55 and over; it was then that I realized I really enjoyed working one-on-one with tutoring clients.

After high school, I worked in various mentorship positions, first as a Resident Assistant, and then as a Teaching Assistant with the Philosophy Department at my alma mater. As a teaching assistant, I would lead group study sessions, and would help augment the primary course material by deepening students' understanding of the text.

Then, between my undergraduate work and law school, I applied the skills I had learned studying deeply for the October 2010 LSAT, and helped coach individuals to improve their own LSAT scores. To this day, I regularly coach students in the process of applying to law school and those looking to take the LSAT.

Different courses have different approaches to LSAT success. That said, when applying to law school, I engaged in a course of self study, and was able to secure a 98th percentile score on the October 2010 LSAT—a twenty-point increase over three months of study. Furthermore, I am able to offer insight regarding the application process, and provide up-to-date knowledge on the changing law school application process and legal marketplace.

Please feel free to reach out for a preliminary phone interview. Thanks!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Career Development

As a career development counselor, I am well-versed in ethical and professional practices as it relates to counseling individuals looking to advance their careers.

I have studied career development theory, career guidance practice, and career guidance policy.

Furthermore, I track labor market intelligence and stay up-to-date through career guidance research.

College Counseling

I have experience working with high-school-age students transitioning to the college environment, particularly when assembling application essays and putting together top recommendations. Furthermore, I am familiar with high school processes and other institutions’ protocols.

Having secured scholarship funding from University of Southern California and assisted other applicants in doing the same, I know how to provide students with a head start in planning their post-secondary options at elite institutions.

LSAT

My tutoring philosophy is called "radical minimalism" and comes from a place of humility; for example, I raised my LSAT score on my own by 20 points from my initial diagnostic. I help students bring only the tools they need to the exam; nothing more.

My former students have attended and graduated from top law schools, including UCLA and USC. Many have received significant scholarship funding as well.

Study Skills

As a study skills tutor, I have experience helping students to manage their own study time effectively—catering it to their individual schedules and learning styles.

For example, I have helped students who formerly struggled to carry out a range of different research activities—they were able to develop schedules, manage the information that was gathered, and successfully produce results.

In sum, I am able to work with students to be able to complete assignments with less struggle as compared to previous experiences—I help students to develop awareness of habits in a way that they are able to review the development of their own study skills, moving forward.

Tax Preparation

Hi there—I have a JD from USC Law, which included tax-related coursework. I regularly assist my clients with tax preparation, and have a clear understanding of the tax code. Furthermore, I regularly call the IRS on behalf of clients.

Very Knowledgeable and Motivating

I had severe anxiety and ADHD and Alex was very understanding and was able to motivate me and reassure me of my skills. I'll be working with him going forward and am excited to reap the benefits of his clearly extensive knowledge of the LSAT and law school application process.
