About Carrie

I've taught as a high school, adult ESL
and undergraduate courses at USC.
worked for LA County for 20 years.
I learned Spanish as a teenager in the Dominican Republic and as a college student in Mexico. I taught three years
of Spanish to undergraduate students at
USC. I got very good reviews.

I completed my doctorate In urban planning in 2005- I also wrote and published a dissertation.

Afterwards I taught for two years at USC. I've also written about and researched many social and political and financial aspects of LA County, I have a 16-year old son and I've guided him through common core at LAUSD.

I'm very fortunate to have had great teachers at UC and USC-who have taught and tutored me. My mom was also s teacher. I volunteered in my son's elementary & middle schools where I learned how to teach common core, Spanish, English, etc...

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

I took my first public speaking class in High school where I was active in debate. I taught public speaking as a teaching assistant in college. I honed my skills as a speaker while working as a deputy for LA county (for 15 years); and as a consultant. I always teach students public speaking skills. I did as a teacher in Spanish, and in the social sciences undergraduate courses. When I taught my own class, Introduction to Urban Planning (PPD 351) I asked the students to speak in front of the class, and make group presentations and at the end of the semester, to complete their final project presentation which must be presented to the class verbally, at the end of the semester.

Social Studies

I have a Doctorate in Planning and Development Studies at USC, which is an advanced degree in urban planning, with sociology, social sciences, politics, statistics, and real estate economics. I also taught three years, as a graduate student; I was a teaching assistant who taught political science, and sociology sections. I also completed a Masters Degree in Urban Planning from USC. I was an adjunct professor in the Price School of Policy, Planning and Development for one year. After I completed my Doctorate, I taught an introduction to urban planning class; I collected all of my own material, created my own syllabus, and created tests and written assignments for the students. I graded their work and received positive evaluations from the students over two semesters.
