About Paul

After living and teaching ESL in Shanghai, China for 12-1/2 yrs, I'm moving back to LA on Oct. 14, 2015. In Shanghai I taught at Web International Training Center, all levels including corporate English (going to companies to teach their staff business English).

Aside from teaching ESL, I also fluent in Spanish (English and Spanish are both my mother tongue) although my focus in China has been teaching English. Other than teaching English to Chinese students, I have also taught Russians, Spanish, Italian, French, Korean, and Japanese students either privately and/or through the training center mentioned above.

I have three letters of recommendation from Web International vouching my teaching ability and skills. For the corporate business lessons, I created 24 lesson plans which I teach at the companies I have worked at.

I have a very good understanding of the Chinese culture and also speak very basic Chinese (Mandarin). Finally, having grown up internationally primarily in Central America, I know and am very familiar with the ways of different cultures globally.

As for public speaking, aside from teaching English, I also was an actor for over 30 years so I know how to speak to large audiences using and applying my acting skills for overcoming nervousness when speaking to large audiences and also how to engage the audience's interest and attention.

Spanish and English are both my mother tongue. I have been bilingual my entire life and grew up in Central America (Panama). While living in Shanghai, China, I also taught some Chinese students Spanish.

I have many years of experience teaching ESL, pubic speaking, understanding culture differences, etc. I have three letters of recommendation supporting my ESL experience from the training center I worked at in Shanghai, China.

I'm always looking for ways to not only improve my skills but also using these skills to help students become more fluent in English.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

I qualify teaching public speaking for a couple of reasons. First, I have taught public speaking (doing presentations) to corporate ESL students in Shanghai, China for the past 12 plus years.

Next, I have been acting professionally for the past 30 plus years and actors often address the audience when performing. In order to do this and be natural, the actor learns ways of overcoming stage fright, nervousness, voice projection and speaking clearly.

Combining my acting experience and having taught ESL students how to do presentations, gives me an upper edge in helping public speakers how to overcome shyness, stage fright and build confidence.

I have also done public speaking on several occasions during my time in Shanghai.
