Cal State Northridge (Media Composition)

About Jonathan

I'm a composer for media (film/TV/video games) who graduated from Cal State Northridge in May of 2015 and was one of the highest ranking students in my program. Through the curriculum's opportunities, I won a composition contest and had my original piece performed by the CSUN symphony orchestra for a sold out house at the Valley Performing Arts Center. Other pieces on that night's program were by John Williams and Gustav Holst. I have also written music for choir, one of my pieces was consulted and read through by the USC Chamber Choir and was performed at several music festivals by the Saddleback College choir.

Teaching and sharing the knowledge of music became another passion when I began to teach theory and ear training at the Heart of Music School in Los Angeles. I have been an instructor there for a year and feel a strong sense of fulfillment when I see my students grasp a new concept and get excited that they understand it. I've also given private composition lessons to aspiring film composers, all of them, so far, have been accepted into CSUN's media composition program.

I have studied the craft of composition under the instruction of seasoned professionals including Scott Glasgow, Elizabeth Sellers, Helene Muddiman, William Malpede, Milen Kirov, Paige Wiliams, Dan Wanner, and David Stahl. My junior college, Los Angeles City College, has one of the most rigorous ear training and theory programs in the state and, upon applying and being accepted to CSUN, I placed into the highest available theory and musicianship classes. During my time at both schools, I have studied music production in classes as well as privately working with audio engineers and producers.

Music is an amazing, complex, and sometimes scary area to explore. With the right guide, however, it can be an incredible experience to learn the craft of organizing sound into something that triggers an emotional response in people.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

I have had private lessons in composition from 2011 to 2014; I've also taken composition classes starting in 2010 with 20th Century Composition Techniques at Los Angeles City College. My major at CSUN required learning composition techniques from both a classical sense as well as a commercial sense in order to cater to the requirements of the film/TV/video game industries. I have been trained in orchestration, songwriting, baroque counterpoint, and more.

Ear Training

Ear training was part of the rigorous musicianship programs at Los Angeles City College and CSUN. Prior to transferring, I was capable of taking dictation of complex and long musical phrases, both melodically and harmonically, and with several instruments playing at the same time. I have one year of experience in teaching ear training at the Heart of Music School.

General Music

My curriculum that I have gone through in school has trained me in basic knowledge of the music industry, the history of commercial music, and goes deeper into theory, songwriting, jazz arranging, orchestration, musicianship, performance, conducting, and more. It is crucial to maintain proficiency in most, if not all of these areas, in order to be successful in this industry because jobs are generally not stable and it's beneficial to be able to do multiple things as one can have multiple jobs.

Music History

Throughout my studies, I have been educated in the history of music ranging from ancient European music through modern compositions by composers such as Phillip Glass and Eric Whitacre. I have studied the music of many regions of the world including Balinese kebyar, Zimbabwean funeral music and dance, Tuvan throat singing, Bulgarian wedding dances and choirs, and music of the Chinese Theater.

Music Production

In my schooling, I have taken four audio production classes that explore the workings of digital audio workstations, MIDI (musical instrument digital interface), and the workings of recording studio hardware and software. I have studied privately under the instruction of producer Jack Douglas, and have worked as an audio engineer/producer since 2010. I have also worked for one year as an audio specialist at the Creative Media Studio at CSUN, where I have given workshops on operating studio hardware as well as how to use Pro Tools.

Music Theory

Theory-oriented classes I have completed:
Harmony I-III
Musicianship I-VI
Music Analysis
20th Century Composition Techniques

Sight Singing

I have trained in sight singing since the Spring of 2009 at Los Angeles City College. My studies continued without interruption through Fall of 2013, when I completed Jazz Musicianship VI at CSUN. I have one year of experience in teaching sight singing at my current place of occupation, the Heart of Music School in Los Angeles.

Songwriting has been a craft that I have studied for twelve years. Through my experience, I have taken classes on writing songs, studying the aspects of lyric writing (meter, prosody, etc.), the meaningfulness of the instrumental arrangement behind a vocalist's singing, etc. I have written songs for commercial projects including a Russian hip hop artist named Armen Way and a web series called Pan.
