I have a military background and after my military service I went back to school and finished a BA at UCLA in June of 2015. I graduated with a double major of International Development Studies and Japanese language and culture with a minor in global studies. I would often make friends with international students and help them with their studies since studying new subjects in a foreign language is very difficult. I would try to put difficult vocabulary into more simple terms. I have used my Japanese to help translate and welcome guests to the base while in the military and also in language exchange programs. This is what sparked my interest in tutoring and I have been doing it freelance since I attended UCLA. I usually tutor business professionals but would be excited for an opportunity to teach other types of clients as well. I personally have had a lot of help from tutors while going through school and can definitely say it was extremely helpful just to have someone put material into different words and help you when you feel lost or stuck. I would like to be able to help others who are feeling this way as well.
In general for my lessons I like to keep things fun so that students don't feel like learning has to be boring. I feel learning opens new doors to new worlds and that is something to be excited and happy about. So I try to plan lessons that are useful as well as fun! Anything assigned as homework is usually an activity so people can feel like they are relaxing and learning at the same time. For example watching movies or listening to music can be very useful if you are learning Japanese. I will ask for you to do these activities in that language. In other subjects I may use documentaries and discussions to help further understand difficult subjects. I enjoy reading but I realize that there are many types of learners and personalities and figuring out what your learning style is can be very helpful. Therefore if you are not sure what style we can try and figure it out together so you have a plan for success!
I have studied anthropology, politics, economics, world history, religion and culture. Many subjects were required for my other major (International Development Studies) and I can explain how this information can be useful to policy making and economies as well as understanding people from other areas of the world.
My grandmother is Japanese and I have been studying the language since I was in middle school. I have many Japanese friends and visit Japan often as well.
I have worked in the Air Force for 12 years so I have plenty of experience in public speaking while giving briefings at work and while in school I have done presentations on my personal research at an annual convention.
I can bring experience into the study of subjects as well as practical reasons for their importance.
I have a flexible schedule contact me and I am sure we can figure something out.
Patient, knowledgeable and encouraging
My son seems to be picking up his interest in Japanese as his confidence starts to build. Very happy, because he was struggling so much before. I'm glad that he is getting such great helpMartin, 6 lessons with Vanessa

Vanessa made Japanese conversation much less intimidating. She was patient and very attentive with my level of experience. I will be working with her again!Martell, 1 lesson with Vanessa
Flexible and great at listening to needs of student.
Vanessa was very good at matching the energy of my daughter, the 9-yr.-old student she was tutoring. My daughter starts shy and then really gets rolling, and Vanessa seems ready to be flexible with that; my daughter can't wait to have her back. Vanessa's accent and depth of knowledge seem very good.Liz, 6 lessons with Vanessa
