About David John

My teaching experience is both broad and dynamic. I over ten years of teaching and classroom experience. For five years I was a teaching assistant for a nonpublic school called Parkhill. There I worked with emotional disturbed, special education, and special needs students. My primary focus was secondary school working for nearly three years with 10th grade special education and the previous two years in elementary. From Parkhill School I moved on to working as a behavior therapist for the Kayne-Eras agency. I specialized in meeting Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). I have been trained in applied behavior analysis (ABA) and cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) which I employ to retain students attention and assess individual needs of my students.

I continued my education at UCLA where I obtained my degree in Political Science and African-American Studies concentrating on political theory (3.5 GPA). During my junior and senior year I was employed with the UCLA Office of Instructional Development and their Community Based Learning Program. I became the lead tutor of the program. I left education to pursue education policy and worked with three state administrations in the California State Legislator. My university education together with my hands-on and professional experience in government, legislation, and political science give me a unique understanding of the subjects at hand. I use my professional experience and hands on learning together with my academic understanding of political science in my tutor sessions.

My experience has taken me to farthest reaches of Los Angeles working with at-risk students for the Mayor's Summer Night program (2010) to private lessons for celebrity's children in Malibu. I continue to enjoy teaching working with students of all ages at a variety of levels and hope to hear from you soon.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

For five years I worked as a behavior therapist for Exceptional Children's Foundation: Kayne-Eras Center. I was trained in Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and applied behavior analysis (ABA). Using these techniques I addressed the needs of students with Autism ages 8 to 16 in all subjects elementary and secondary. I worked directly with parents and students in home and in the classroom to complete homework assignments and tasks assigned to them by teachers.

Government & Politics

I graduated from the University of California Los Angeles in 2011 with a degree in Political Science and African American Studies. I began a political career as an intern for State Senator Fran Pavley where I became the Community Relations Intern. I learned the Legislative Constituent Management System to track and quantify constituent concerns always doing my best to resolve their issues. I also promoted Senator Pavley’s platform through event marketing materials and promotion.

After graduation I left my positions as a behavior therapist to pursue a staff position for State Assemblywoman Holly Mitchell. I continued to work for her administration for two years until she moved on the State Senate. I then worked with State Assemblywoman Cristina Garcia for about one year before pursuing my own business in political consulting.

My experience has allowed me to work for many campaigns spanning local to nation wide. I have run campaigns for Congressional candidates as well as provided consulting to LA County Supervisors.

I use UDL lesson planning to address students needs and relate personal experience in teaching.

Political Science

I graduated from the University of California Los Angeles in 2011 with a degree in Political Science and African-American Studies. Upon graduation I worked directly with elected officials in the California State Legislature. I worked for three administrations for a total of four years experience (three in the CA State Assembly and one in the CA State Senate).

Special Needs

I have ten years' experience working with students with special needs and other learning disabilities. At a nonpublic school called Parkhill School I was a teaching assistant for nearly four years and on my fifth year I taught my own classes as a special education instructor. I then transitioned into behavior therapy for Kayne-Eras Center where I continued to educate special needs students both in home and in the classroom. I specialize in addressing the needs of individualized education plans (IEPs). I am comfortable working in team teaching environments or one on one sessions. I have been trained in applied behavior analysis (ABA) and cognitive behavior therapy (CBT).
