I have been a tutor for ten, eleven and 16 year olds. These children were in the Los Angeles County Foster Care System ( L A County Child Protetive Services). I was paid as an independent contract tutor through a contractor with the County. I typically met students at the library or in their placement homes. These children were considered to be learning challenged. With the younger children I utilized connect the dot and other word puzzles to help them begin to be able to write correct sentences. As well as writing and reading I helped the students with math and taught them good study habits and time management for testing. With the older students I worked with I also helped them with history and social science.
I have also tutored adults. I helped two friends to improve their English as Second language skills, an adult taking a global business management class, and several poets who wanted to have help with editing and rewriting their work. I love the ah hah moment. This is the moment when I can literally see the light bulb going on in a student's brain, and he or she understands what I have explained and begins to feel more successful.
I find when working with any student that if I can help the student learn how to study, to break a concept down into steps, or even how to manage time to take tests successfully I feel a deep contentment and know that I make a difference.
I would say that my main goal as a continuing tutor is to help the student to stop being afraid of a subject. I want to help students think of learning new things as an adventure. I have a natural afinity for history and the social sciences because of my background in Art History. During my time in undergraduate and graduate school I studied studio art, archelogy, philosophy, and how to teach art. Because I was so bad at Math I hired a tutor, and that is how I learned not only how to do Math but teach it to others. On an ongoing basis as a tutor I utilize youtube and other sites to help my students.
I am very interested in helping people learn. You do not need to feel inadequate or a failure because you don't understand a subject. Usually you just need a helping hand and a tutor who thinks creatively about learning. I hope to hear from you! I have been a tutor for ten, eleven and 16 year olds. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
