About Jim

My interest in photography began as a young child, when my father---James Newberry, who founded the photography department at Columbia College Chicago---taught me how to use a camera and darkroom. That childhood hobby became a lifelong career, when, after graduating from Columbia (where I studied photography and filmmaking), I began shooting portraits for magazines, record labels, and other commercial clients.

I continue to work as a freelance photographer, but several years ago I began conducting my own photo workshops, and providing one-to-one photography training. With over 20 years of professional experience, shooting both with film and digital, I have a lot of skills, techniques, and other insights to share. I can help with all aspects of photography: technical, aesthetic, and business. I've been told by students that my approach is friendly and patient, and that I made complicated issues easy to understand.

Tutoring topics include:

- how to use your camera, including advanced controls
- how to make flash look great, on or off-camera
- how to get natural, authentic expressions from portrait subjects
- post-processing: Photoshop, Lightroom, and other photo editors
- photo business issues: setting up a website, self-promotion, how much to charge, etc.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe Lightroom

I've been using Lightroom since 2008, with version 2. I use Lightroom almost every day to manage my large (300,000 +) archive of photographs. So I have plenty of experience using Lightroom for ingesting, developing, organizing, printing, and exporting images; as well as printing books and producing slideshows using the application.

Also, I have extensive experience as a tutor, teaching Lightroom skills.

Adobe Photoshop

As a commercial and fine art photographer, I've been shooting digital photographs for more than 10 years. Photoshop is an integral part of my process; I regularly use the application for many purposes, including retouching, color-correcting, making collages, designing promotional materials, and more.

Photoshop is a powerful, full-featured application that can be daunting to learn, but I've had great results with students learning it quickly, via direct tutoring.

Macintosh

For more than 20 years I've been using Macs to help run my freelance photography business. I've used them for photography post-processing, video editing, accounting, for designing promo materials, and creating web sites. In that time I've learned a lot of shortcuts and tricks to keep my workflow speedy. I've also become adept at hardware and software troubleshooting and problem-solving, and how to keep Mac systems running smoothly.

Photography

I have a BFA degree from Columbia College, Chicago, with main concentration in photography. For over 20 years I've worked professionally as a photographer, shooting assignments for clients around the world, including: Atlantic Records, Esquire, The Guardian, Interview, LA Weekly, London Times, Mojo, New York Times, Rolling Stone, Spin and Sub-Pop.

I have won awards from APA (American Photographic Artists), Chicago International Film Festival, Communication Arts, and others.

Video Production

I've been shooting film and video projects at a professional level for more than 20 years. When I began, I was shooting with 16mm film cameras, and now I shoot with DSLRs and other digital motion cameras.

I have won awards for documentary films and music videos that I directed and photographed. I'm highly skilled with lighting, using tungsten, LED, and fluorescent lighting fixtures.
