I recently graduated from Cal Poly Pomona with a MS degree in mathematics option in statistics, and I also taught various levels of math/statistic classes in Cal Poly. I currently teach math and statistics in a community college. I have a single-subject teaching credential in math and I taught high school for several years. I taught Pre-algebra, Algebra I, Algebra 2, Geometry, Calculus, Statistic, and various other levels of college/high school levels of math classes.
I really enjoy tutoring because I can go at any pace you decide. In a classroom setting it can be difficult to keep a pace fast enough to challenge the gifted students yet still not lose the students who need a little more help. Tutoring one on one is more interactive and can be much more beneficial to the student because he or she can stop me at any time. Lesson is customized to the needs of individual students. As a teacher, I am committed to doing anything I can to help my students to learn and achieve their individual learning goals. I design lesson plans that incorporate real-life examples and applications to help students see the relevance in a topic as well as the interconnectedness of math concepts. I also believe in effectively breaking down complex concepts into simpler and more detailed chunks.
Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or would like to set up a session. One of the most rewarding aspects of tutoring is the "light blub" moment when I see the student finally "get it." I look forward to meeting with you and helping you (or your child) with his or her course. Joyce was very helpful and insightful with my questions. She explained things very well and made complicated topics easy to understand. In just one session helped me understand two weeks of material and was very open to any questions or methods of learning I had. Very happy to have her as a tutor and will definitely have more sessions with her!
Thank you for the feedback Sarah, and the opportunity to use R-programming to do statistic!
Joyce tutored me in my statistics class. She made the subject seem so easy and understandable. She was on time to the tutoring sessions. I enjoyed that she is patient, goes at the students paste and passionate about what she does. Definitely, recommend Joyce!!!
After my first meeting with Joyce, I am now well prepared for my test tomorrow. She really helped me understand the concepts I was learning in statistics. I was struggling, but now I am more confident in myself!
Joyce tutored my Algebra 1, I like her teaching style. She is nice and straight forward. I can understand her easily. She also taught me organize skills so I could trace back my steps to find mistakes. I would recommend her to my classmates.
Joyce helped me review for my geometry test and also helped me to gain a better understanding of the subject. I had trouble with proofs for a while, but Joyce was patient and taught me her own method to solving them. I learned a lot and was able to translate everything I learned to my work in class. She is an excellent tutor with a fun and optimistic personality!
It was a pleasure meeting you and I enjoyed our tutoring session. You have a strong understanding theorems that are used in proofs and so I decided to focus our session on methods of proving. I am glad that it was helpful and that you translated those proving methods into your daily work. I can't think of a more reward way to spend 75 minutes!
I took Joyce for a 6 week summer course for Quantitative Literacy 2 math. Joyce was very knowledgeable about the subject, patient, and encouraging. She was always on time and well prepared for each session. Joyce tutored me, but she also gave me life long study skills. She is kind, smart, and a motivator. Hands down she is a five star tutor. I passed the class with a B also.
Joyce taught me a lot of things that I didn't understand before such as piecewise defined function, Area below the horizontal a-xis, Laws of logs, Circular function, Trig Function, Graphing sine & cosine, Trans forming sine & cosine, Continuity, solving Trig Function. What I liked about Joyce way of tutoring is she's really nice and friendly when helping you, she works with you to figure out the problem together. She sends in work that you and her worked on together. She also sends you extra examples to help you on parts that you are struggling the most in. Joyce helped me accomplish better understanding on Pre- Calculus.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
