About Brian

I am an electrical engineering graduate from Tulane University. I took several courses in various levels of math, including calculus, statistics, linear algebra and differential equations. Beginning my junior year, I became a teaching assistant for the math department. I helped grade homework assignments and weekly quizzes for intro. calculus and all the way up to calculus III.

In addition to my degree, I have been a tutor for almost 10 years. I have tutored mainly the SAT and ACT, as well as all levels of high school math and science. My philosophy with my students is baby steps. Essentially, break a problem into its parts as far as needed until it begins to click for the student. Alternatively, I've used "metaphors" to group a problem into its particular family. Often times, a math problem seems difficult but it is really just "disguised" really well. The same techniques used to solve "easy" problems can be applied to solve difficult ones, just with more steps. I'm proud to have had success with both methods.

Kindness and empathy are my cornerstones when working with students. I know how it feels when teachers talk down to their students - plenty of engineering profs don't get this. With kindness and empathy, the learning experience becomes comfortable and even enjoyable. I also try to instill trust! Trust is vitally important for students trying to understand something new. I like to convey "we" are in this together: let me steer the ship and let the student hop on-board.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

COOP/HSPT

I have an electrical engineering degree from Tulane University. I have been a high school tutor for over 10 years since 2005. I've tutored every high school math course from arithmetic to calculus. Very nice and patient tutor!

This was my son's first time with Brian, when I finished the session my son told me I want to tutoring again with him .. it's very nice. For me, my son has told me that he likes him very much, that is very important, since a student does not learn from someone with whom they feels uncomfortable, but they learns a lot from someone they likes. Thank you so much Brian it was a pleasure to meet you.
