CSU Northridge (Theater Arts)
Hello! My name is Joanne and I have been teaching with the Santa Monica Unified school district for the past twelve years. I am familiar with curriculum in all grade levels, and often work with adults as well. I tutor most subjects, but my favorite subjects are history and English. I tutor all ages in reading, writing, grammar, formulating topic sentences, and teaching the five paragraph essay. I also love to create that WOW topic sentence and paragraph that draws the reader in right away. Over the years I've often worked with special needs students with a variety of learning challenges including, Autism, auditory processing delays, ADD, Dyslexia and other physical and cognitive challenges. I find these students to be very endearing and truly deserve to feel that they can learn. I also really enjoy working with exceptional students who need to be challenged beyond what they experience in the typical classroom. When I first meet a student, I assess their learning style in order to create plans that are customized to their strengths. learning should be fun, so I use games and strategies that enhance the task at hand. Elementary students are so inquisitive, and really enjoy learning, especially learning games. Additionally, I am inspired by secondary students who have a higher capability for deductive reasoning and with whom I can have more in depth conversations. I have also helped adults who just needed to feel more confident. The thing I love most is to see a student of any age feel good about themselves, learn, and believe that they can succeed. I do have references.

Very patient with my fidgety 7 year old, has great rapport with him and is helping him with reading comprehension.
Thank you so much for that positive review! I have lots of experience, and I'm happy that it shows.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
