About Jessica

My name is Jessica and I am a first year medical student in the Charles Drew Program (focus on under-served patient populations in medicine) at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine. My background is varied across a number of subject areas, however my passion for tutoring is a common thread among them all.

Originally from the Midwest, I graduated from one of the most academically competitive high schools in the city of Chicago, Saint Ignatius College Prep. The rigor of my high school curriculum prepared me well for the challenges of college. I attended Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia, majoring in Comparative Women's Studies with a concentration in Women's Health. In 2011 I graduated with my B.A. and a minor in Spanish, as well as pre-med course completion. To further prepare for medical school, I moved to Carbondale, Illinois where I successfully completed MEDPREP, a certificate-granting post-baccalaureate program that has been dedicated to the education and matriculation of pre-medical students since 1972. For a year following this, I also worked as a pharmacy technician while applying and interviewing at schools across the country.

My tutor experience spans from high school to this past year (shortly before relocating to Los Angeles). In high school I served as a peer tutor, and continued to tutor throughout undergrad and post-bacc, most frequently for writing (class essays, college and medical school application essays), physiology, chemistry, Spanish, math, and science. During undergrad I also had two years of experience as a teacher's aide for 4th and 5th grade students in an Atlanta public school as a UPS scholar. I also volunteered twice per week in addition to required duties to assist in their after school tutor program for grades 3-5. The proud aunt of a Senior high school niece and 8th grade nephew, the "unofficial" tutoring sessions provided to these two has also gifted me with a significant amount of patience! :)

I believe I can be of most service to high school, college, and adult learners interested in alternative methods to approach difficult material (ie. concept mapping, learning-style focused review, etc.) and students dedicated to preparing questions for me to guide them through after they have put forth the initial effort to learn the material. Despite, or more fittingly, "because of" my experiences in challenging curriculums and with advanced material, I have not only been a tutor but also received tutoring over the years. I am therefore very receptive to feedback and understand the importance of finding a "good fit." I hope to be the great fit you are looking for in a tutor and look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
