About Jonathon

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to read my profile. I am extremely excited by the opportunity of spreading my knowledge and passion for the natural world and its mathematical characteristics. I am currently double-majoring in Physics and Mathematics at Occidental College. I am also the founder and President of Engineering Club here at Occidental. As a club, we focus on developing sustainable technology, including solar power, weather balloons, and renewable energy. We also are involved with community outreach programs local to Los Angeles that aim to tutor kids in general education, with an emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Thus far we have sent two weather balloon apparatuses to space to collect atmospheric data. Our club is currently working on installing a computerized/solar lighting pathway.

I also co-founded Occidental's Green Energy committee, of which I am the only student. The committee consists of professors, engineers, electricians, lawyers, and a Dean of the college. Our goal is to redo Occidental's Energy infrastructure to reduce our environmental impact. The project will cost an estimated $3,500,000.

Further, I work part-time for LADWP's educational outreach program, known as Solar Cup. The Solar Cup is a year-long event where high-school teams build a solar-powered boat from scratch. This job requires sophisticated knowledge of circuity and physics, as well as the ability to communicate with and teach students.

I was also accepted for research in the field of Astrophysics through Occidental College, where I will be searching for exoplanets that are within the habitable zone.

Before Occidental, I graduated high school with a degree from Washington State as well as the International Baccalaureate program. I also competed in varsity tennis, swimming, and soccer, in addition to being President of Astronomy Club and Vice President of History Club. To this day, learning continues to be my passion. Now, I aim to give back to the community and help spread my love of knowledge.

Thank you,

Jonathon L.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary Math

Mathematics is a subject I've been passionate about for as long as I can remember. In middle and elementary school I competed in math competitions such as the Math Olympiad. I competed not because I was forced to, but because I enjoyed it; so much so that I am now double majoring in Physics and Mathematics at Occidental College. To share my enthusiasm and help others discover their love for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, I founded our schools engineering program.

While some may have a natural gift in mathematics, I believe that anyone is capable of excelling in the subject and enjoying it as well.

Linear Algebra

I have completed the Linear Algebra course offered at Occidental. I passed with a B+.

Physics

I founded Engineering Club at Occidental College to give students practical knowledge of physics, and to establish an outreach program for those interested in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
