The College of William and Mary (Linguistics)
Hi! I specialize in standardized test preparation and high school academic subjects. I received a perfect score on my SAT and was a National AP Scholar in high school. I've tutored math for over a decade, and specifically the SAT since 2009. I also have experience writing for educational publishers and companies who make standardized tests, so I'm very familiar with the inner workings of these tests. One of my most recent students raised her SAT score by 600 points!
I first started tutoring in 2000, when I realized I could explain math concepts to my little sister in ways that were easy for her to understand. Shortly after, our school counselor put me in contact with several other families at our school, and I began helping them in math, as well. I really enjoy helping people realize that math isn't something of which they need to be afraid. I love when students look at a math problem they wouldn't even have attempted before and immediately begin solving it easily!
It's also important to me to impart good language skills to students. Writing, grammar, mechanics, and vocabulary are too often overlooked in today's curricula, so I make sure to emphasize them. Good writing is half of being a good communicator, which is vital to success in all aspects of life.
I also have a degree in linguistics from the College of William and Mary.
My approach focuses on empowering students with the tools they need to thrive not only in high school, but also in college and beyond. Many tutoring services trade on tricks and fast fixes to get results, and while these do have their place, they do little in the long term to equip students to function fully in the world they're studying to enter. I prioritize learning how to learn, so regardless of where students find themselves, they can seek out, digest, and analyze the information they need to succeed. During sessions, we not only discuss the material at hand, but also the students' schedules, their study habits, and their prioritization and organization skills. Viewing a student's performance on an exam as part of a larger picture is the way I feel is the most effective.
I'd love to help you achieve your current or long-term goals in any way that I can, whether they be raising a grade in a class, applying to college, preparing for a test or entrance exam, or even just learning new study skills. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or to schedule a session! Hi! I specialize in standardized test preparation and high school academic subjects. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I've been tutoring for over 15 years in all subjects and began tutoring the SAT in 2009. I received a perfect score on the test and went on to major in linguistics and minor in math at the College of William & Mary (VA). During my senior year, I interned and subsequently began working for an educational consulting firm, writing standardized test questions and sourcing reading passages. I've worked with students ranging in age from 7 to 20 years. My goal is to help all my students not only ace the test, but also gain skills that will benefit them as they further their academic and professional careers.
