About Mike

Mike is a well practiced, hard working, well educated professional. He earned a Bachelor of Music in Performance and has been studying music for over 17 years. He not only teaches, records, writes and performs music, but he is also very fluent in chart writing, reading, and arranging music. Mike’s transcription of Brian Blade’s drum solo from “Jazz Crimes” by Joshua Redman was published in Modern Drummer’s December 2009 issue. Mike has played countless gigs throughout Los Angeles and Ventura Counties ranging from rock to big band styles.

Mike is a very patient and thorough teacher, focusing on technique and all around fluency of rhythms. This reading, music styles, and hand technique. His goal is to get students playing music on day one and focusing on the essential techniques to understand music as a whole. He has been teaching for over 10 years- head drum instructor at Ventura County School of Music and Yamaha School of Music here in LA.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
