About Ryan

I have been a lover of music my entire life and will soon be graduating with a degree in Music Theory and Composition, with an additional focus in Production. I am currently a senior at Bowdoin College, one of the top liberal arts colleges in the country, and would love an opportunity to share my knowledge and experience with anyone eager to learn about music.

My specialties are music theory (including AP test preparation), composition (for a number genres ranging from rock to orchestral to electronic), and production (I am fluent in Logic, Pro Tools, Ableton, Mainstage, and Garageband, and I have an extensive history both writing and producing various music projects). As a composer and performer myself, I know that music can sometimes be a chore when taught in a strict classroom setting, so I will teach not only the language of music to anyone interested, but also its practical (and experimental) applications in the real world. My lessons will be highly personalized, and I will tailor my advice to the individual needs and interests of the individual, so feel to request anything that interests you, whether it's Jazz, EDM, movie scores, software operation, or anything that you are passionate about!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I am an avid student of past and contemporary American events; in addition to scoring a perfect 5 on the AP U.S. History Test, I minored specifically in the subject in college. I also have over 5 years' experience in teaching American History as a tutor, both for class and national test purposes. Let me tell you all about the Hawley-Smoot Tariff or the presidential election of 1968!

Composition (Music)

I am currently one semester away from getting my bachelor's degree in Music Theory & Composition, with an additional focus in Production. I have loved music my entire life, and in addition to my formal education, I have a long history of being deeply immersed in music culture. I have long written reviews for albums, songs, and shows for my school papers, and I am also in the process of creating and publishing a website wherein I submit regular tutorials for those interested in theory and production. I have written, produced, and self released a number of EPs through various music endeavors and have experience in composition, performance, production, and management. I am also in two bands, both of which perform entirely self-written material which I have solely composed. I have produced and written music in a number of genres ranging from rock to post-rock, electronic, and orchestral. In addition to this, I have successfully taken a number or related courses in my college experience, such as Electronic Music Production, Songwriting, Composition, Tonal Analysis of Classical Music, Advanced Electronic Music, and Orchestration.

General Music

I come from a musical family and have self-taught myself a large number of instruments (Piano, Trumpet, Flute, Clarinet, Guitar, Bass Guitar, Vocals, Banjo, Oboe, and Mandolin). I am a lifelong performer and have always deeply immersed myself in music culture. This immersion comes not only from a deep commitment to popular music culture and a firm knowledge of its history and present, but also a formal education. I have taken a number of related courses over the course of my college career, such as Music and Everyday Life, Classical Music, Latin Music, Middle Eastern Music, Tonal Analysis of Classical Music, and the Western Canon (of Classical Composers). I also publish regular reviews and editorials regarding modern music, writing about a number of genres.

Government & Politics

I am an avid student of past and contemporary American events; I majored in the subject in college, with a focus on American Politics. I wrote my thesis on the factional histories of the Democrats and Republicans (It's complicated and so, so interesting). I also have over 5 years' experience in teaching Government as a tutor, both for class and national test purposes. Let me tell you all about the Hawley-Smoot Tariff or the presidential election of 1968!

Music History

My love of music culture and history comes from both a deep devotion to popular music culture, but also from a formal education. I have taken relevant courses such as Middle Eastern Music, Tonal Analysis of Classical Music, Latin American Music, History of Jazz, Electronic Music (including historical research), and The Western Canon (of European classical composers). In addition, I have always been passionate about music history in my personal life, writing a large number of reviews for contemporary works, editorials concerning past musical events and phenomenons, and the impact of music history on the modern musical world.

Music Production

I have been a composer for my entire life, ever since I was first handed an acoustic guitar at seven years old. In pursuit of this passion, I have also become deeply acquainted with music production. I am proficient with a large number of music programs (such as Logic, Pro Tools, Ableton, Mainstage, and Garageband), as well as with contemporary recording techniques (miking, acoustics, etc.), and I have a long history of working as a producer and engineer, both for the work of others and for my own compositions. I am familiar with most music programs, DAWS, and equipment, as well as techniques such as mixing and mastering.

Music Theory

I have a long history of experience with music theory. First, my mother was and is a piano teacher, and has instilled the language of music theory into my vocabulary and creative process. I am a Music Theory and Composition major and have thus taken a large number of relevant courses such as Music Theory (introductory, intermediate, and advanced), Counterpoint, Composition, Orchestration, Electronic Music (intermediate and advanced), and Songwriting (intermediate and advanced). In addition, I have experience with preparatory tests such as the AP exam.

World History

I am an avid student of past and contemporary American events; in addition to scoring a perfect 5 on the AP World History test, I have over 5 years' experience in teaching World History as a tutor, both for class and national test purposes. Let me tell you all about the War of the Roses or the fall of the Roman Empire!
