About Emily

I am an attorney and PhD with over 15 years of teaching and tutoring experience. In law school, I earned the highest grade in 9 of my courses, and graduated at the top of my class. I passed the CA Bar Exam on my first attempt, then clerked for a federal judge and worked as a senior litigation associate at a nationally ranked law firm. I now devote my time to tutoring law students for their coursework, the Baby Bar, and Bar Exams, teaching Legal Writing at USC, and working with attorneys to strengthen their legal writing skills.

In addition to my JD, I hold a PhD in Rhetoric and Composition. My teaching experience includes graduate and undergraduate writing courses as well as SAT, GRE, and LSAT prep courses for two of the biggest standardized test prep companies in the country. Although I now spend much of time time working law students and lawyers, I also work with high school and college students on college and grad school personal statements, SAT/GRE/LSAT verbal and writing, and resumes/cover letters.

Teaching and tutoring are my career, not an aside. I tailor my sessions to the individual needs of my students, and my students see results by way of stronger analytical and writing skills, higher exam scores, and better grades. I look forward to working with you to help you achieve your academic and professional goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bar Exam

I am an attorney and a member of the California Bar. I passed the California Bar Exam on my first try. I graduated 2nd in my class from UC Davis School of Law, after which I clerked for a federal judge then worked as a senior litigation associate at one of the top law firms in the country. I now tutor law students for their coursework, the Baby Bar, and the Bar Exam, and am an adjunct professor of Legal Writing at USC.

Career Development

I have a PhD and a JD. I regularly work with students and professionals on job applications, grad school applications, and on figuring out their desired career paths and how to get there. In addition to my experience working with others on career development, I have also changed careers myself (from attorney to professor to private tutor/small business owner), so I personally understand what it's like to go through the process.

English

I have a PhD in English and am an attorney. I teach undergraduate writing courses, and have over 10 years of experience teaching and tutoring writing. I tailor my tutoring sessions to the needs of each particular student as we work together to improve their analytical reading and writing skills.

ESL/ESOL

I work with my L2 students to assess their level of understanding and I tailor our work together to meet their particular needs.

I graduated second in my class from UC Davis School of Law, where I earned the highest grade in 9 of my courses (including Legal Writing), and was a teaching assistant for a legal writing course. After law school, I completed a clerkship for a federal district court judge and worked at an international law firm. I am also a member of the Order of the Coif and the California Bar, and have a PhD in English. I have worked with law students from a variety of schools to help them understand course content, master IRAC, and get higher grades.

Proofreading

I am an attorney, college writing instructor, and English PhD. I have over 10 years of experience proofreading, editing, and teaching and tutoring writing. I have a meticulous eye for detail and expert knowledge about grammar, punctuation, and typographical errors.

Through these experiences I have developed a variety of reading strategies that I work on with my students. I am an attorney, hold a PhD in English, and currently teach writing courses at Arizona State University.

SAT Writing

I am a college writing instructor and attorney, and have a PhD in English. I have over 10 years of experience teaching and tutoring writing, and I have experience teaching and tutoring SAT prep. Vocabulary

I have worked with a variety of students to develop their vocabulary, including non-native English speakers, students studying for the SAT, students studying for the LSAT, undergraduates in writing courses, and law students. Through these experiences I have developed multiple strategies for students to use in efficiently mastering vocabulary. My students can expect to do a range of activities--both with me and on their own between our sessions--to strengthen their vocabulary knowledge.
