About Joshua

I completed my MD at Harvard Medical School and Masters in Public Policy at Harvard Kennedy School, and am now a second year resident in emergency medicine at UCLA. I was an undergraduate at the University of Pennsylvania, where I graduated summa cum laude with a major in the Biological Basis of Behavior, and was awarded Phi Beta Kappa as a junior (given to top 1% of the class). I also received the Frazier Prize for the best GPA among all graduating varsity athletes. I tutored fellow Penn students in 10 pre-med courses for two years as an undergrad, and spent a year teaching younger medical students clinical decision making skills at Harvard. I have now been free-lance tutoring for 2 years - I have tutored the new MCAT through Signet Education in Boston and many other subjects through Wyzant.

I grew up in foggy Daly City, right outside of San Francisco. I have played soccer my whole life, including four years of varsity soccer at Penn, and also love snowboarding, surfing, and basketball.

I tailor my tutoring methods to the specific strengths and weaknesses of my students, and strive to empower my students to achieve the goals they have for themselves. I like to create a relaxed, fun environment during my sessions - my goal is to reduce stress, not add to it! I am very flexible and will make sure you get exactly what you want out of our tutoring sessions. I would be excited to work with you if you feel I would be a good fit for your needs!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have performed well in math classes up to the level of multivariable calculus. I scored a 760 on the math section of my SAT's. I have experience tutoring both middle school and high school level math.

Anatomy

I performed well in the anatomy course at Harvard Medical School. I am also well-versed in clinically relevant anatomy from my time working in the hospital. I have tutored fellow medical students in anatomy, and I continue updating my own anatomical knowledge in order to maintain my clinical skills.

Biology

I tutored undergraduates in Biology I and II for two years at the University of Pennsylvania. I received A+ grades in both courses. I have continued to learn much more biology in medical school.

Chemistry

I tutored undergraduates in general chemistry I and II, and organic chemistry I and II, at the University of Pennsylvania for 2 years. I received A+'s and A's in those courses. I received a 14/15 on the physical sciences section of the MCAT, which includes chemistry.

Economics

I took the advanced track in microeconomics I and II at the Harvard Kennedy School, and received A's in both courses.

Physiology

I completed basic and advanced physiology and pathophysiology courses at Harvard Medical School. I continue to use physiological concepts everyday while working with patients in the hospital. I have also taught younger medical students physiology through the use of simulation mannequins and emergency medicine cases.

Proofreading

I have taken multiple courses in advanced writing and communication strategy at the University of Pennsylvania and the Harvard Kennedy School. I have extensive experience reading essays from students in middle school through graduate school. I can help students with basic grammar and sentence structure as well as more advanced stylistic features of their writing. I specialize in helping students craft and hone their narratives, so that the messages they wish to convey becomes clear and memorable.

Soccer

I have played soccer since I was 6 years old, including four years on the Penn Men's Varsity Soccer Team. I was the captain and MVP of my high school team for two years, and received the Philadelphia Soccer Seven Academic Player of the Year Award twice while playing in college. I also coached soccer for middle school and high school kids in Brazil during the summer before medical school. I have extensive experience with myriad skill building exercises, and believe I am well-qualified to help kids of any age and ability level to improve their game!

Statistics

I tutored undergraduates in statistics at the University of Pennsylvania for 2 years. I received an A+ in the statistics course at Penn. I also took advanced statistics at the Harvard Kennedy School and received an A in that course.

Writing

I have had to write extensively for my Masters in Public Policy degree at the Harvard Kennedy School. I have edited medical school admissions essays for Harvard undergraduates in my role as a non-resident pre-medical tutor. I received an A+ in my writing seminar at Penn. I received an 800 on my SAT Verbal, and a 790 on my Writing SAT II. I also received the English Department award upon graduating from high school.
