About Shannon

Hello all!
I am a recent graduate of DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. I have recently moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in marine science, and I am looking to establish myself as a tutor in the biological sciences (life sciences in particular, including biology, ecology, botany, basic marine and environmental sciences). My tutoring methods are fairly straight-forward: I prefer to allow the student to explain what they think of any assignment and its solutions before explaining what I think the best solution may be. At each step of any assignment, I try to involve the student in explaining to me as much as possible before giving my input. If there is no assignment and the tutoring situation requires a lesson plan from my end before anything, I will arrive to the appointment with a clear plan for the allotted hiring period as well as a path for each tutoring session.
As for my credentials, the majority of my undergraduate studies were dedicated to the fields of general biology, including botany, ecology, conservation, introductory genetics and chemistry, nutrition, and environmental sciences. I am qualified and eager to tutor these subjects at all levels through senior year of undergraduate study.
Additionally, I have had three unique internship experiences that have given me great research and analytical thinking skills. The deductive reasoning and critical thinking skills I have gained from these research jobs make it very easy for me to apply my skills to an array of academic situations.
If there are any additional questions or concerns before my hire, I am very open to returning those emails through questions sent to me on this website. Thank you so much for taking the time to consider my experiences for your needs. Best of luck!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

BA in biology from DePauw University: GPA 3.7

Internship at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
Internship at St. Louis World Aquarium
Internship at L'aquarium de la Porte Doree in Paris
-all internships were research based and required species identification skills

Botany

During my undergraduate education at DePauw University as a Biology major, botany was the focus of numerous classes that I chose to take to complete my degree. I believe that botany is an extremely important subject in today's society, as many of us have lost touch with the knowledge of our natural surroundings. I took classes like "Plants in Human Cultures," "Organismal Biology," "Plants, Diet, and Health," "Plant Biology," and many other class like "Ecology" and "Conservation Biology" that had extensive sections concerning botany. Additionally, one of my senior projects was about the invasive nature of the grass known as "Phragmites." I do not know a laundry list of plant species, but I am extremely familiar with plant parts, behaviors, and identifying characteristics.

Study Skills

I believe that study skills develop from strict organizational and time management skills. No matter how difficult the homework, if you sit down at the beginning of each week and structure work times into each day, you can successfully complete the homework at a high quality. The most important part of this procedure is to discover the student's learning techniques; once it is known how the student learns best, mapping out the daily homework times by subject becomes even more efficient. Encouragement, organization, and time management is all it takes!
