In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been a student of the Bible since I have been 10 years old in my churches. I attended Wheaton College which is a Christian college and have had Bible classes. I have taken the following courses: The Word is Out, Bethel Bible Series, Walk Thru the Bible, many adult Sunday School classes and taught Bible in Sunday School and Jr. Church.
Most of my 38 years of teaching has been in K-6. I taught 6th grade for 18 years and was the music teacher, besides teaching all the required subjects. The rest of the years I taught in 3rd and 4th grades. My first year of teaching was in a one-room classroom with grades 5-8. I also taught grades 7-8 and did substitute teaching in elementary through high school. I also worked in special ed.
When I began teaching, we were expected to teach all aspects of language, including reading, spelling, writing and grammar. Then linguistics became the trend and I studied the course. Later, the whole language approach from Australia came to pass and we were all trained in that approach. When that happened, grammar and spelling were discarded. Many years later, they were brought back but I always continued teaching spelling and grammar. I love all the language arts.
I have a BA and MA in music and music education. I play piano and flute. I have conducted choirs and sung in many professional groups. I am a speaker and volunteer at the LA Opera. I have sung in opera, musical shows and done theater.
I play piano by reading music. I have studied piano and played in recitals. The last piece I have been working on is Claire de Lune by Debussy. I directed both adult and children choirs and have had to play for rehearsals and for performance. I am also able to teach group piano.
