About Marissa

Hi, my name is Marissa, and I am an Ivy League-Educated Tutor available for one-on-one tutoring. I have been tutoring and helping students with homework since high school, and enjoy working with them to reach their full potential. I have extensive experience tutoring in Math, English, Test Prep and general subjects. I received a 2130 on my SAT's in high school and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a dual degree in Computer Science and Fine Arts in May of 2011. I took 9 AP classes in high school and was a member of the National Honor Society. I am also a member of several elite tutoring services in LA, but am always looking for private clients.

I am free to tutor most weeknights from about 7-9 p.m. and most Sundays (starting as early as 10 am). Please feel free to contact me with any question you may have.

I am also available for lessons in computer graphics. Specifically, I have extensive experience with Nuke, Photoshop, Maya, etc. I currently work in the VFX industry and am happy to work with students looking to learn more software and techniques.

I have tutored over 20 students in the Los Angeles area over the past 5 years. Subjects have ranged from Standardized Test Prep to General Homework Help. All of the students I have tutored in ISEE Prep have been accepted to and attended their first choice Private Schools. My SAT students have seen 100+ increases in their scores. Please contact me about special rates based upon subject and lesson frequency.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Autodesk Maya

I work in the Visual FX industry and use this software as part of my job. I also studied this software when I was in school. When I was in College, I TA'd for a class for introductory Maya techniques, and an advanced class for modeling characters in Maya. In the past I have taught students by having them develop and light/render a character from start to finish.

Computer Science

I have a degree in Computer Science from the University of Pennsylvania. I have experience programming with Java, C++ and Python. I primarily use Python in my day-to-day work in the VFX industry.

Drawing

I have loved to draw since I was a child. I have a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Pennsylvania and took supplementary classes at FIT and Parsons. I continue to use drawing in my job as a VFX artist and have TA'ed Art Classes in the past. I love teaching students basic and advanced drawing techniques!

Elementary (K-6th)

I have tutored students as young as 3rd grade and can identify with students of this age. I participated as a "Big" in the Big Brothers, Big Sisters program, as well. I will work with a student on the subjects they are studying in school, as well as creating an individualized plan to supplement their schoolwork. I try to identify the areas that need improvement, and work to develop them by utilizing my extra study resources. I like to try to keep school fun with building strong foundations as a primary goal at this age.

Film

I work as a VFX artist in the Film/Animation/Video Games industry. Over the years I have learned a great deal about creating films. I also took several courses in college to study Film theory and storytelling.

ISEE

I have been tutoring the ISEE with a private company for the past 2-3 years. I like to use practice tests and construct an individual study plan for each student to guide them through the areas of the material that they need the most work in. I also teach test-taking strategies specific to the ISEE that allow students to maximize their score. Every student I have tutored in the ISEE so far has been accepted to their first choice private school.

Painting

I have extensive experience in painting traditionally and digitally. I have studied watercolor, acrylic, and oil, as well as painting in Photoshop with a Wacom tablet. As part of my job as a Matte Painter, I have continued to develop various painting techniques.

Video Production

I work in the Visual FX industry and use contemporary software/techniques as part of my job every day. Primarily, I utilize Nuke, Maya, and Photoshop.

While in college, I led many classes for students in my major to learn the production pipeline. I enjoy working with students developing their own projects and assisting in bringing the quality to the next level.
