University of California Los Angeles (Astrophysics)
I have always been fond of teaching and sharing with others information about the world we live in. My willingness to help others understand this world comes from a lifelong love of learning things myself. I am an Astrophysics major student at UCLA hoping to follow in the footsteps of giants such as Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking; all who have studied physics and astronomy. Astrophysics is a study of Astronomy and Physics. They say studying Astronomy is a humbling experience and it is. My passion lies in understanding what this world is and where we are in this world.
In order to have a good teacher, the teacher himself/herself should be passionate about what they're doing. They shouldn't be someone who just memorized things but actually understand them. Knowing is one thing, Understanding is another. I have a keen understanding of Math and Physics. I am someone who is able to articulate and simplify the concepts so that the student can easily understand what is going on.
My specialty lies in tutoring Math, Physics, and Astronomy for success in school and in other subjects. Due to analytical nature of Math and Physics, if a student does well in them, they will have a higher chance of doing well in other studies. This comes from the fact that Math and Physics forces one to think, not memorize. It allows a student to believe in himself/herself that they can solve any problem that comes in front of them.
For Math, I tutor Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Trigonometry, and Calculus. I am also proficient in Differential Equations as well.
For Physics, I tutor Conceptual Physics, Non-Calculus Based Physics, and Calculus Based Physics.
I am also tutoring Astronomy as well.
In High School, I've taken AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Physics, and AP Calculus. I was also part of Academic Decathlon and National Science Bowl. I was a Defense Attorney and Prosecution Attorney in Mock Trial. I also received a perfect 800 on SAT Math.
My style of tutoring lies in the way that I think of myself in the shoes of the student. Having been a student for many years of my life and having seen different types of teachers, I've learned that knowing something doesn't make that person a great teacher. Being a great teacher comes from being able to see it from the student's point of view, recognizing which part of the subject the student is having trouble with, identifying and fixing. I am keen on understanding where the student might have a problem. When I identify a weakness in the student's knowledge, I start from the beginning so that the foundation of student's knowledge would be solid instead of glossing over the troubled areas. Being an Astrophysics major, I am capable of analyzing the situation and coming up with a solution for the issue. You will have someone who will help the student build a strong foundation for the subject and someone who takes great pride in the student's improvement.
I hold myself to a high standard and for that reason I ask for feedback. I try to be flexible with time and I do have a 6-hour cancellation policy. I will however, offer makeup classes.
To ensure that student have a quiet and comfortable study space in which to work with me, I will have a space in the local library or cafe to teach private lessons and group classes. However, I am happy to travel to another location if that is more convenient for the student.
I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve success in your studies!
**My posted rate is for meeting in West LA.** If you want to meet somewhere more convenient for you, my rate will increase by $15/hr to compensate for driving expenses (additional driving time, gas, and insurance), and sessions have to last at least one hour. I can meet students in their homes or at a local public library, such as the branches in Westwood, Brentwood, and West LA. 2 hour session minimum unless negotiated.
My son's been struggling with his summer Physics class at UCLA and Joon was able to help him understand some concepts that were very difficult for him. He was also willing to meet my son near school so the tutoring session was very easy to schedule. Joon also followed up to make sure my son was clear about the material they'd gone over!
My daughter is learning Algebra at a public school-- which means Common Core. Joon was able to look at her work and understand exactly the approach her teacher was using and adjust his teaching to complement my daughter's teacher's method -- but in a way that she actually understood! I couldn't be happier!
Joon is both knowledgeable and has good teaching techniques. He'd use real life analogy to describe difficult problems. Good learning experience!
Joon was a great tutor. I used Joon to help me study for my intro to astronomy exam. He was very knowledgeable of the topic and was very helpful with explaining the material in an easy to understand way. I would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for help in an astronomy course.
Great job, answered my questions, explained a lot of poker math to me, that I had wondered about for a long time. We will meet again next week.
Joon helped understand how poker is played. It was a good hour and a half. I got a lot out of our first lesson. The distance is far for him to come, so we will have to do two hours each time. That is OK, but I would rather have the choice of 1 or 2 myself. He is very good and I plan to start using him as often as I can. I recommend him highly.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have general knowledge of Math, Physics, Astronomy, Chemistry, Biology and general science. I understand the material required for ASVAB exam and I believe I will be able to help the student understand the material better.
I have taken a Differential Equations class at a college and have received an A in the course. I am familiar with solving Ordinary Differential Equations as well as doing Laplace Transforms, etc.
I have received a High School diploma after 12th grade in high school. I am proficient in Math from Pre-Algebra to Calculus and beyond. I am also proficient in Physics, Chemistry, Astronomy and other subjects. I can help explain the subject in an easier way for the student to understand.
I am a native Korean speaker who is fluent in Korean. I can read, write, and speak Korean. I have also taken advanced Korean at UCLA. I can help with pronunciations and conversations as well as written communications.
I have been playing poker for over 5 years and have played in cash games and tournaments. I understand betting sizes, ranging opponents, odds against calls and folds, and other factors involving poker decisions.
