About Mike

I am a professional jazz musician who has been coaching and teaching for a number of years.
I play music in a number of venues; the size of the band varies from solo piano to big band.
In the course of playing and teaching music I find that I am able to communicate with a wide
range of personalities and abilities. I find it both a pleasure and a challenge to relate
to students and other musicians at different levels of ability and interest. My goal in teaching
is to nurture a love of the subject, as well as to cover whatever the appropriate material is.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

I have a Bachelors degree in Composition from Berklee College of Music. Since receiving that degree, I have been continuously involved in improvising, writing and analyzing different styles of music. I feel that I am qualified to teach composition - at least at the undergraduate level.

Ear Training

In the course of getting a Bachelors Degree in Composition at Berklee College of Music I took two semesters of Ear Training. I was placed in the "advanced" ear training class; the normal section required 4 semesters of ear training. I still use "moveable do" in my work as a professional pianist.

Piano

I have been playing professional jazz piano for a number of years. I have studied both classical and jazz piano from a number of teachers. At one point I studied classical piano for ten years with Dusi Mura, who taught Radu Lupu (a Romanian concert pianist). I continue to perform jazz piano with a number of groups.

Songwriting

I have been studying popular songs since I started playing piano. At Berklee College of Music we would analyze songs as part of the harmony class. Since graduating from Berklee I have written several songs. Also, I have been working with a few students on song writing for a number of years - I tend to concentrate on both the chord progression as well as the relationship between the melody and harmony.
