My passion for teaching goes back a long way. Prior to teaching guitar I was a Tae Kwon Do instructor. As a Musicians Institute Graduate and Award winner (Most Improved Player - Spring class 2011 Guitar Program), I've learned that hard work and dedication can pay off. Over the last 12 years I've taught hundreds of students privately and for music schools/stores. It's hugely rewarding seeing students improve as they go and realize their musical goals and dreams. This is the best job I've ever had!
I specialize in any music that is contemporary (any form of rock, pop, blues, country, you just about name it) , and I learn almost entirely by ear. I've lost count of how many lessons I've taught in which I heard the first time only moments before and was teaching/charting it out for the student immediately. I can also teach you to read tabs (short for tablature) or real sheet music, even though it isn't as common to read on guitar. I always give homework and suggestions for practicing at the end of each lesson. I also enjoy giving students advice on equipment (amps, strings, picks, pedals, guitars, there's a lot of options) purchases. The guitar is a very uniquely personal instrument and there's something for everyone, which makes it the coolest instrument ever!
I've had Paul Gilbert (Mr. Big, Racer X), Jamie Kime (Zappa Plays Zappa), Doug Rappoport (Edgar Winter Group), Dave Weiner (Steve Vai), as teachers, played hundreds of shows, written and performed my own music, become a better player/musician than I ever thought possible, and made more friends from that magical piece of wood with the strings on it than I could have ever imagined. The guitar has been the greatest thing I've ever done with my life. I am very much looking forward to enriching your life and love/appreciation of music further with the guitar in your hands! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I completed extensive ear training courses at Musicians Institute as a student from 2009-2011. I've learned hundreds of songs by ear - melodies, chords, progressions, solos, phrases, you name it.
I've been playing guitar for 20 years, taught ages from 5-65 for 12 years, privately and at Guitar Center Studios and at a private music school. I also have an Associate of Arts degree in Guitar Performance from Musicians Institute in Hollywood, CA.
I have held a 3rd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do since 1996.
I've competed in over 30 tournaments, taught hundreds of Tae Kwon Do students, private and at a professional Dojang. I have also sat on the judges panel for many promotional testings/belt advancements.
I am a certified UTF (United Tae Kwon Do Federation) instructor, based out of northern IN. I passed a written examination and a series of physical qualifications, plus a minimum of required teaching hours to qualify.
I write music with many students just to help them understand the instrument better (far as playing chord progressions, using certain techniques, scales, etc.) when they're first playing. It's important for them to understand you don't absolutely have to learn someone else's music to play an instrument, even at first.
I also teach students how to put phrases together, plus arrangements and transitions (this sounds like a verse, intro, chorus, pre chorus, bridge, interlude, etc.) into sections or full songs.
I took a 3-month Artist Development course at Musicians Institute with Michael Anderson, a well known songwriter (he wrote "Maybe it was Memphis", a huge country hit). He taught me a lot about song structure, lyrics, and gave me an entirely new perspective on songwriting. Those 3 months were invaluable.
