Greetings! I specialize in tutoring Advanced Placement U.S., European, and World History. I am a Ph.D. candidate in European history and have completed graduate level teacher training in World and U.S. history. In addition, I have over ten years experience teaching and tutoring History at the high school and college levels.
AP History can be an extremely challenging subject for even the brightest of students but, in my experience, the help of a good tutor can make a big difference. Whether you are looking for help with class assignments or specific exam training or both, you could not find a more effective or qualified instructor in the Greater Los Angeles/Pasadena/Arcadia area.
Many of my students seek help keeping up with classwork assigned during the year. In these cases, I am able to help the student with content comprehension, homework and project execution, and in-class test preparation. These students have found that regular meetings throughout the year not only boost their GPA but also leave them miles ahead of the pack when it comes time for the standardized test preparation at the end of the year.
Other students come to me specifically for the standardized exam training. In these cases, I can provide a conceptual lens for the student to zero in on the facts, themes, and questions that the actual AP exam tests time and time again. My students go into the exam knowing exactly what to expect which helps immensely with accuracy and time management. In these cases, students' familiarity with the exam is best achieved through intensive practice of the exam itself. This is especially useful in training the student for the essay portion. Students will understand the format, style, and strategies of effective writing that AP readers are looking for in a max score essay. In this way, my students become expert AP history test takers as much as historians.
Most often my students enjoy the benefits of both working with me throughout the year and the end of year standardized exam training. However, I am also available (if time allows) for single sessions, emergency exam crams, and project and paper guidance. I am very flexible and open to different forms of utilization. I have even had adults meet with me to discuss historical questions for continuing education or that simply interest them.
I can travel to tutor students in the convenience of their own homes or if you prefer at a public location such as a Starbucks or a local library. I mainly operate out of the Silver Lake/Los Feliz/Burbank/Glendale/La Canada/Pasadena/Arcadia areas but will consider other areas in west LA and the valley depending on availability.
Please know that in my experience my space and availability will fill up rather quickly in the first few months of the school year. Those who secure my services at this time will take priority for scheduling throughout. Those who come later are more than welcome but can expect less flexibility and opportunities. In other words, don't wait too long!
If for any reason you are not completely satisfied I will refund the fee for that session. I have a flexible cancellation policy as well.
I look forward to achieving the rewards of success together. Many thanks for your interest. Greetings! I specialize in tutoring Advanced Placement U.S., European, and World History. Preston can pinpoint what is important and can make suggestions without being too detailed. This allows the student to be original and independent.
Preston is a very knowledgeable and patient tutor. My son said "He shows a great understanding of the material even without a book" My son's grade had improved significantly in a very short period of time in his AP European class. Since Preston tutored my son in 2nd semester, my son felt very confident taking the test and enjoyed the class more.
Preston has been terrific for our daughter. She really enjoys history and was feeling overwhelmed in her second AP History class. Preston has helped her tailor how she takes notes to be more efficient, has taught her how to find the important information within all the material, and does it all very enthusiastically. She feels very confident in her work and is doing very well thus far.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a Ph.D. candidate in European history. I have many years experience teaching European history at the undergraduate collegiate level. I have a high familiarity with the AP exam in European history and take the exam annually.
