I believe that all students have the ability to succeed in mathematics if given the right chance with the right person; someone who can motivate them through understanding and explanations that makes sense. There is often a disconnect in our school system between students and teachers because of a lack of one-on-one time. I believe that success in mathematics requires a holistic view of the student, meaning targeting both the academic problems as well as motivational problems and putting effort into the school/student/parent/teacher relationships that surround the student.
I have a doctorate degree in education and a master's degree in teaching mathematics from the University of Southern California. I have had a very successful career of over 10 years in the classroom with diverse populations of students here in Los Angeles, as well as in Hawaii; where I am from. I am licensed and certified to teach math in California.
The secret to my success as a math teacher lie in my (1) ability to connect with students academically, (2) my ability to explain math concepts at the level of the student in ways and with words they are able to understand, and (3) my ability to understand WHY students who have traditionally failed, fail. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
