About Vivian

I'm a recent college graduate from Scripps College. I majored in Honors English and minored in Dance and French, with a GPA of 3.8. I have tutored English and French for private clients throughout college, and I founded the Claremont Colleges Literary Society, a club that worked with students on literature and writing. I have taught dance since I was 16 and am the president of a small ballet company. I scored a 164 verbal, 154 math and 5.0 writing on the GRE and a 31 on the ACT.

I love working with students of all ages, and look forward to continuing to share my studying skills. I believe that creating a comfortable, relaxed environment is important for students, and that tackling new material slowly and with clarity is imperative to learning. I'm friendly but have a calm personality, and want to find ways to help students engage thoughtfully and happily with work that may otherwise seem impossible.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I received a perfect score of 36 in English and a 35 in Reading on the ACT. I earned a 2070 on the SAT. I am currently an instructor in SAT and ACT for Kaplan.

Ballet

I began training in ballet at the age of 3, and have continued to dance at least 2 days a week ever since. I trained with former professional ballet dancers across America and in Serbia, continued my dance education with a Dance minor in college, and then founded my own ballet company in college. I taught ballet to dancers ages 2-7 from when I was 16-18 years old, and continue to train college-age dancers. I have worked with beginning adults as well as highly-trained ballerinas.

English

I have excellent grammar and vocabulary, and I scored a 164/170 on the verbal section of the GRE. I studied English literature in college.

ESL/ESOL

I have studied ESL and I have tutored students for the past 4 years in a variety of English-related subjects.

Handwriting

I taught my younger brother, who has ADHD, how to improve his handwriting for several years. I also taught creative writing at a summer camp, the Green River Preserve, during the summers of 2011 and 2012, and for the 6-12 year olds this course included a section on handwriting. Finally, I took a calligraphy class in France over last summer while I studied abroad in Aix en Provence. I am not a true calligrapher, but the experience taught me a great deal about the basics of good penmanship.

Literature

I am graduating this year with a major in Honors English from Scripps College. My thesis on Walt Whitman and female writers of the 19th and 20th centuries is over 100 pages long. I am currently applying to PhD programs in English Literature.

Reading

I teach SAT/ACT reading, and earned a score of 35/36 on the Reading section of the ACT. I have a BA in English from Scripps College; I graduated with honors.

SAT Reading

I earned a 2070 on the SAT in 2009, and a 31 on the ACT (perfect score of 36 in English, score of 35 in reading). I have been tutoring students privately and through an organization called the Claremont Colleges Literary Society for several years.
