About Carlos

Hello,

I'm Carlos. It has always been inspiring to me to assist in a student's scholastic and personal development, and help them realize their unique potential. I enjoy contributing to a student's growth in this way. I am currently employed as an educational director, attorney, consultant, and adviser, after having earned three university degrees, and am accustomed to helping people learn. I adopt a very flexible approach to tutoring and mentoring to allow a student to open up and feel comfortable talking to someone outside their home environment to best determine and work on their greatest areas of need and growth. I help each student set goals, develop an understanding of their desired educational path, and focus on a tutoring plan to cover individual subjects and needs. I can also help students identify their strengths and desirable career path. I have tutored and mentored at-risk youth, elementary, high school, university, pre-graduate, law school and pre-medical school students on different subjects ranging from: English, grammar, reading and writing, paper editing, public speaking, college, law school, and graduate school preparation and paper writing, editing, and proofreading, the basics of what it requires to run a business, marketing, advice on students' social interactions to best prepare them for personal growth and helping define expectations for their educational pursuits and professional lives. Whether a student comes to me with a paper due in 24 hours, or to help study for a big exam they need to prepare for in two months' time, or to meet regularly to change their study habits and cultivate strong grades or overall performance, I believe tutoring is about helping a student get results, and I've devoted my tutoring expertise successfully towards that goal.

The First Tutoring Session:
I usually use at least a portion of the first session to get to know what your goals and needs are and to determine the best approach to take to meet those goals. I don't believe there is one way to tutor or teach each student; every situation is different and requires careful reflection with parental input.

Subsequent Tutoring Sessions:
For subsequent sessions, expectations, lesson plans, and execution of the student's goals are emphasized. I try to be as flexible as possible to the student's desired scope of the tutoring session while offering guidance and direction. The sessions can be very material-intensive and geared for specific considerations, or have a broader scope. My tutoring sessions promote a lot of enthusiasm, because learning and improving should be celebrated and enjoyed by the student.

I am always open to negotiate something to fit a particular student's needs and costs. I am also very strong at teaching English as a second language (ESL) students. Feel free to contact me if you are interested in a tutoring/mentoring arrangement, or if you have further questions.

My approach is centered on the student doing the work, while I provide the guidance, scope, refining, and environment, as needed for them to achieve and excel. Most of my students earn strong, if not exceptional grades, and I hope that track record continues for future students. I look forward to meeting you to help you achieve your goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bar Exam

I have taken and passed the bar exam in the State of Hawaii, and in Ontario, Canada, and am licensed to practice law in each jurisdiction.

Business

I have run my own businesses, and was a partner in my law firm for the past several years, responsible for operating a budget and determining business needs and operations.

Career Development

I have spoken at law school events at the University of Hawaii Richardson School of Law on career path, the expectations of life as a professional, and the work expected of a professional, attorney, and business owner.

I have also counseled law school, medical school, graduate school, and other students to help prepare them for the written portions of their graduate school entrance applications

I have also worked and cultivated business operations in several career fields, from entertainment, to practicing law, to selling insurance, to rental real property ownership, to fitness equipment. I can and have provided general to advanced advice over a variety of career fields.

College Counseling

While a partner at my law firm, we brought in students on several occasions from graduate schools in our local area, and I was able to express to them the preparation, commitment, and dedication expected of them in college and what skills should be cultivated based on what eventual employers look for.

I have also mentored graduating high school students who were accepted to college to express what the college experience will entail and how to develop proper study habits.

Fitness

I have worked as a personal trainer for Goodlife Fitness Clubs, started my own exercise device company, and am active in strength and conditioning, bodybuilding, strength training, functional training, and body weight resistance training formats.

I also participate in yoga, basketball, tennis, football, swimming, and surfing, and can teach technique in all but swimming.

Football

I participate in football and used to be an NFL Certified Contract Advisor and understand the business of football, the training of players, and the performance techniques among many positions of the game.

Marketing

I was the Marketing Director for my law firm and have held a marketing position for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Network since 1997 and understand how to operate a marketing budget.

Public Speaking

I have performed over 100 public educational seminars as an attorney and partner of a law firm, and now as educational director for another law firm.

Tennis

I played tennis on my high school tennis team, received coaching, and still play leisurely.
