About Daniel

I am an award winning (HHMI-Teaching Fellow award, 2014) skilled, and dedicated science teacher of all things biology, neuroscience, psychology and statistics.

I graduated Cum Laude with highest departmental distinction in Neuroscience from the University of Illinois, Chicago and then went on to pursue my graduate degree (M.Sc Biomedical Science with an emphasis in Neuroscience) at the University of California, Irvine.

I have mentored numerous undergraduates in the fields of neuroscience, molecular biology, and cognitive psychology; and have taught biology at the college level. I also have an inside look at the field with at least 5 years of direct research experience in laboratories ranging from the study of cognition to molecular biology.

My teaching philosophy rests on foundations that demand clear and concise explanations on the part of teacher and student. I believe every concept, no matter how complex, can be taught when it is explained in a clear and concise matter.

I also believe in 'active learning', not passive book reading which can become monotonous and trite, but learning which requires active retrieval on the part of the student. Studies have shown, again and again, that this is the best way to learn and consolidate new information.

In addition, I have been playing guitar for over 14 years and have proved myself as an effective guitar instructor from children to adults.

If you are looking for an award winning and passionate teacher with direct experience in the field, please contact me for tutoring!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anatomy

I have taken several courses in anatomy and physiology at the college level, have dissected various species (mice, rat, pig, mink, human)and have completed two years of graduate study in anatomy and neurobiology.

Biology

As a graduate student, I have taught biology at the college level and have utilized various molecular biological techniques in the laboratory to study the brain. Throughout my undergraduate career I have taken at least 7 independent biology courses, as well.

Guitar

I have been playing guitar for 14 years. I am highly skilled in a variety of different styles (rock, blues, jazz, classical) and have 3 years of teaching experience. I will send samples of my playing if requested.

Microsoft Excel

I have been using excel for 4+ years for efficient data mining and data analysis. I am fluent in various functions such as: pivot tables, Vlookup, If-->then logic statements, as well as a variety of statistical and mathematical applications.

Psychology

In addition to several psychology courses taken as an undergraduate, I have worked in a cognitive psychology laboratory for over 3 years, studying human cognition. I also graduated cum laude and with highest distinction in Neuroscience, and attended graduate school in the same discipline.

SPSS

I have worked with the SPSS platform for over 4 years to analyze and interpret scientific data. I have access to the software on my home computer, as well.

Statistics

I have over 4 years of experience in statistical analysis. As a graduate student in the field of neuroscience I analyzed statistics on a daily basis. I am familiar with the concepts as well as analysis software such as SPSS, Prism, and R.
