About Greg

I'm an experienced working photographer with a healthy balance of international clients and personal passion projects. I've been shooting for 20 years and have been teaching for 10, with many of my students graduating to become working photographers themselves.

Providing a student with a safe place to ask questions is the launch pad to infinite possibilities. My focus as a tutor is to support a student's curiosity, develop his or her imagination and spark a genuine love for making powerful imagery that truly moves people. It's about connection. I founded the Atwater Photo Workshops in Los Angeles to establish this connection.

It's not what you see, but rather how you see. Your perspective is what yields compelling images.
My job is to provide technical education allowing more room for artistic expression.

With over 20 years in film & television, I understand visual storytelling. I am confident in all aspects of photography including the darkroom, Photoshop & Lightroom, working in the field, and the business side of things. I have a lot to share and I invite you to be a part of it!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe Lightroom

Most people think that all the photographer's work is done with a camera, but that's only a small part of it.

Adobe Lightroom is the path to creating indelible imagery.

There is an art to the technicality of Lightroom. Anyone can learn the craft, but ultimately it's about the way you see.

My approach as a tutor goes beyond suggesting photographic recipes. I inspire curiosity and spark imagination, while offering skills as a means to fluently express your point of view. With each session you will have assignments and new skills to play with.

My enthusiasm is contagious, and I aim to ignite a student's passion; this is the clearest way to produce honest images that resonate with others.

Adobe Photoshop

Most people think that all the photographer's work is done with a camera, but that's only a small part of it.

Capturing photographs is only the beginning. Editing in Photoshop is the path to creating indelible imagery.

While Photoshop is a technical process, there is a definite art to it. Anyone can learn the craft, but ultimately it's about the way you see.

My approach as a tutor is not merely to offer recipes for compelling imagery, but rather to inspire curiosity and spark imagination, while offering skills as a means to fluently express one's point of view. After only one session you will have new skills to play with.

My enthusiasm is contagious, and I aim to ignite a student's passion for the art form; this is the clearest way to produce honest images that will resonate with others.

Film

With nearly 20 years as a professional in the film & television industry, I understand visual storytelling, and I am experienced in the technical means necessary to achieve a given look and produce high production value, often with few resources.

My focus as a tutor is to develop the student's understanding of the filmic language and to create an environment for the student to discover his or her unique voice.

Through the study of cinema coupled with hands-on film making, I aim to develop his or her voice, allowing it to shine and resonate with others.

Photography

With over 20 years as a professional photographer, I am confident in all aspects of photography.

My goal as a tutor is to demystify the technicalities so that I can help you develop your artistic voice.
