I am experienced, patient, reliable, and friendly. I find joy in helping students overcome obstacles and gain confidence - especially in problem areas. I believe that everyone has their own particular learning style and study pace; I encourage students to do their personal best. My specialties are teaching elementary mathematics, pre-algebra, writing, science, and reading comprehension.
My current students range from third grade to college level. I work with both public and home-school students, both native and non-native English speakers. When possible, I create individualized curriculum for my students to engage their natural interests and help them fall in love with learning. My aim is to keep students interested and participatory, while comprehending as much as they can during each lesson.
My previous teaching experience includes working as an instructor for Oregon's Outdoor School Program where I taught sixth graders about various aspects of nature such as plants and soil via hands on experience. I also served as a volunteer tutor for college students in the subjects of pre-algebra and psychology.
I hold a B.A. degree in Mass Communications/Media from Linfield College. After completing my undergraduate degree I worked in the entertainment industry for over 10 years. I am currently preparing for graduate school in the field of psychology.

She's great. My first 2 hour session with her was very productive and fun. I got a lot of help in terms of idea building for my essay and she was the best assistant I could ask for! She's very thorough when it comes to writing and also very respectful! She's awesome!

My daughter (11 years old) has been meeting with Rivers twice a week over the summer break. Rivers comes prepared for each session. In fact, she requested information ahead of time to make sure she was prepared when we first started. She has connected well with my daughter and does a great job explaining everything to her to make sure she understands the material. My daughter really likes her and finds the sessions to be very helpful. Rivers is always on time and my daughter is looking forward to working with her. We are happy to have found her.

Rivers comes to every lesson on time, prepared, and smiling. She keeps my two sons focused and takes them through the work step by step for full understanding. Her reports are extremely detailed and give us real insight on the progression of the sessions. She has been a great addition to their schooling.
She probably deserves a 5 star with this being the first session. I'm very pleased. 90 mins seems just enough time to get it but not feel too overwhelmed. My son was happy so I'm happy. Again, very good communicator and I feel good about her.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am proficient in working with fractions, exponents, solving for unknown variables, word problems, etc.
I have experience teaching the fundamentals of business such as understanding sales reports (such as how to decipher key performance indicators such as traffic and conversion rates), marketing strategies, relationship-building, and customer service. My method of teaching is review operational strategies used by successful companies including internal systems, sales programs and playbooks, ways to maintain profitable margins while maintaining value, customer retention, and the prevention of loss. I use basic arithmetic to show students how to measure a company’s progress and success by viewing their sales reports. I offer real-world case scenarios as examples of how to handle both internal and external customer conflicts. I was the head of Communications and Customer Service for Virgin Megastores North America. I wrote the Customer Service manual used by the company and was responsible for the editing and publishing of the company newsletter, as well as the main page of the internal company website. I worked in fast-paced entertainment companies for over 10 years. I have a B.A. degree in Communications. I attended the Billionaire Boot-camp workshop where I studied business principles and internal and external roadblocks to success.
I have experience teaching students (elementary level to college level, both native and non-native speakers) different forms of writing. I help students discover how to effectively express their message in the form of writing with ease. When guiding students with the creation of essays that be used for college entrance requirements, my method is to walk the student through the process in an organized manner. The steps I take with the student are the following: brainstorming ideas, creating an outline, writing clear sentences, checking grammar and proper notation of references (if applicable), and finally editing. These are all tools needed to create successful, compelling essays to submit with college applications. I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications; I attended the Fishtrap Gathering of Writers Workshop. I have written music and movie reviews for the Virgin Megastore website, as well as an article that was published in RubberStampMadness Magazine. I have experience with various forms of writing both from my education and work experience such as biographical, persuasive, and expository essays; newspaper articles; poetry; and writing for company websites (both internal and external sites).
I worked as an instructor and camp counselor for three semesters helping 6th grade students learn about our natural environment as part of the Outdoor School program in Oregon. I taught groups of seven to eight students at a time on various topics such as the classification of soil, erosion, photosynthesis and photo-tropism via hands-on experiments and hikes through the camp site.
I successfully completed college level Pre-algebra & Elementary Algebra.
I am currently preparing for graduate school in psychology.
I have completed the following courses: Introduction to Psychology, Stress Management, Family & Marriage, Lifespan Psychology, Personality & Social Development, Biological Psychology. I am currently taking Psychology: Group Dynamics.
I emphasis various ways to study and retain information effectively. Some of the skills that I highlight are effective note-taking, the use of flashcards, repetition, time management, and lifestyle choices that improve the potential for success. I also help students determine how to decipher what information is critical when executing reading comprehension exercises and mathematical word problem.
My students are the most excited about the use of flashcards. They love that I provide different colored flashcards and let them create their own flashcards to study with. They learn best when we create games and other creative ways to reinforce the information that they are studying.
I am currently tutoring students in third grade to college level. I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communications and a minor in Latin American studies.
I graduated from Linfield College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communications. My undergraduate studies included a focus on information gathering, the study of film, video editing, radio broadcasting, the mass media and popular culture, newspaper practices, and public relations.
I have also written research and biographical papers in various psychology classes as I am currently taking the required courses to apply to a reputable graduate school in Psychology.
