About Jillian

Hello! NYU Graduate here! I would like to save you the trouble of searching on behalf of your child/student for a tutor!

I am a young, spirited, confidence builder, and an educational advocate for students. My tutoring sessions are engaging! Hands on! Idiosyncratic! I structure my sessions to best fit the child's/student's needs! I also incorporate on-going assessments, positive reinforcement, and research-based practice to ensure that students are gaining confidence and achieving success in their weakest areas!

My focus is on: English, Reading (phonics, phonetics, literacy, reading comprehension, spelling, writing, and essays), Oral communication, ESL/TESOL/TOEFL, Accent Reduction or American Pronunciation Compton P-ESL Method, k-6th (Math, Science, Geography, History, and Language Arts)

A little bit about me:

My name is Jillian V. and I have a B.S. in Communicative Science and Disorder (CSD). This degree means that I studied a really BROAD subject that encompasses a range of disorders that students and other individuals suffer from; ie: language delays, dyslexia, stuttering, learning/reading disabilities, ADD/ADHD, autism, and other sorts! I studied this because I want to become a speech language pathologist and help students achieve in school without having their disorders interfere in their studies :) From this program, I also learned to assess, target, and intervene problems to better the lives/educational experience of students by using scientifically proven practices that treat such disorders.

Because of this experience, I became very proactive in assessing/targeting problems that many students suffer. As a result, after I graduated from NYU, I was immediately hired at an elementary school in California to work with 3rd-6th graders in a special needs class. There, I help the instructor implement the school curriculum such as math, language arts, and geography. Today, I walk into mainstream classes to push-in and pull-out students to help them with their English, Math, Reading, and other work!

Being immersed in the public systems allows me to understand exactly what your child needs and what teachers are expecting from your child! This is what makes me the better candidate!

Apart from having experience at the elementary level, I have worked at a multigenerational school in Pasadena where I worked one-on-one with Mother's of low income who needed help in ESL/TOEFL and in passing their GEDs. There, I was one of the leading tutors working with at risk mothers who needed intensive tutoring. Also, I worked alongside the educational program director to ensure that my students were receiving the attention they needed. Within the first semester, my students improved immediately.

I am extremely confident that you will not regret using my services.

I would like to say thank you for your consideration and good luck on your search! Please do not hesitate to call/email/text me at any time.

I look forward to speaking with you soon!

Thank you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

After receiving my B.S. in Communicative Science and Disorder from NYU in 2013, I was immediately hired by Brea-Olinda Unified School District in Brea, California as a Paraprofessional/Instructional Aide to work with students in 3rd-6th grade at Country Hills Elementary School. There, I assist teachers in implementing the curriculum being taught in classrooms such as language arts, math, geography, science, and history. Recently, I have been implementing the push-in/pull-out models in classrooms to work 1:1 with children who have special needs so that they could meet their educational goals.

Apart from working at an elementary school, I currently hold an internship at Providence Speech Center where I aide a speech language pathologist in group therapy sessions for bilingual children ages 5-6 who have speech, articulation, and language disorders in English and Spanish. There, we use research-based therapy techniques to treat each child's deficiencies.

I qualify as an elementary tutor (k-6th) not only because I have the experience in working with this demographic, but because I am very familiar with the curriculum being taught in the public school systems. With this knowledge, I am able to use the tools that are used in classrooms today to help bridge a student's understanding in their weakest areas, regardless if they are typical or nontypical developing.

Furthermore, as an academic tutor, I am very enthusiastic about education and in helping students achieve their academic goals. With my passion, I always ensure that all my tutoring sessions incorporate an on-going skills assessment, positive reinforcement, and making each meeting a fun and very eventful experience.

ESL/ESOL

I have been working as a private ESL/ESOL tutor for the past 3 years. I have serviced students and adult professionals in the San Bernadino, Orange County, and Los Angeles regions. I am also certified in the Compton PESL as an Accent Reductionist and have also completed formal training to help foreigners in ESL.

Reading

I have been trained under regular and special needs teachers to help students with their reading abilities such as phonics, decoding skills, reading fluency, reading comprehension, and other sorts. I have also received a certificate with the local library where I have helped students and ESL speakers learn how to read. I am very up-to-date with scholarly research and am very aware with the latest findings that promise literacy success.

As a reading tutor, I provide materials such as sight-word flash cards, worksheets (graphic organizers, thinking sheets), short stories, and reading programs that students use on my assistant learning device (ALD). My students have always improved in all areas of reading. In addition, they all have also noticed a boost in their confidence! Most importantly, they always enjoy meeting with me and finding the motivation to continue reading on their own! Independence, confidence, and success is what I guarantee and I can assure you that your child/student will feel no different as a result of receiving my tutoring service.

I make every effort in structuring my lessons to be very fun, exciting, and animated for the child, so that they can continue to read independently!

Special Needs

My degree in Communicative Science and Disorder from NYU gives me the credibility to work with the special needs population. As an undergraduate at NYU, we learned about nontypical developmental/ developmental disorders and how to accommodate one's education in meeting their needs. With this background, I gained experience working with special needs students who have speech, language, and articulation impediments.

Not only does my degree give me credibility, but my experience does as well. After graduating from NYU, I moved back to California and began to volunteer at Ability First in Claremont where I assisted leaders and ABA therapists in their after school program. There, I engaged with students and helped out in teaching different subjects such as in reading, writing, and oral communication. I also assisted in teaching young adults in the program how to shop for items and cook. Our philosophy at Ability First is to teach students in a natural environment by using whatever functioning ability that the individual may have available and expand on that strength to better the quality of life for each student. I learned to adapt this philosophy in my own tutoring sessions because ultimately, this is the key to building one's confidence! At Ability First, I have worked with students of all ages and with different disabilities. I have experience working with children/young adults on the Autism Spectrum, who have down syndrome, cerebral palsy (CP), Aspergers, ADD/ADHD, and emotional disorder. Working with this population required me to be First Aid/CPR certified. I mention this to reassure parents that their special needs child or young adult is in the hands of a professional who knows what to do in worst case scenarios.

Shortly after being with Ability First, I began to intern at Providence Speech and Hearing Center in the city of Orange where I currently am at now. There, I am a speech language pathologist aide (SLPA). I assist certified SLP's in group therapy sessions where I document, facilitate, and prompt speech. Also, I assist in providing speech therapy to typical and nontypical developing students. At our clinic, we provide assistance to spanish speaking students. In these sessions, we ensure that bilingual students only use spanish if it is their primary language being used at home and with friends and family. These students then go into other sessions where we target English. This experience has given me the ability and tools to be able to carryout similar work as a bilingual (Spanish/English) speech language pathologist.

Spelling

I have been working in the school district for over 3 years as a substitute teacher and a RSP/SDC Paraprofessional. Additionally, my schooling and training has helped equipped me with the tools and strategies to help students learn how to spell correctly.
