About Paul

I have 25+ years experience performing and teaching saxophone and jazz to all ages, including the jazz studies program at Santa Barbara City College. Whether you're a complete beginner just looking to quickly be able to play some tunes, an aspiring musician looking to develop your craft and prepare for a lifetime of playing sax, or a professional musician looking to work on a specific area of playing, my systematic approach to saxophone playing and musical development can put you on the fast track to achieving your goals. Affectionately known as 'the sax guru' and 'the horn man' by my clientele, I custom tailor lessons to match my students goals and abilities. My specialties include (among other things) tone production, technique, altissimo, ear training, improvisation, style/repertoire, jazz theory, and equipment management (horn, mouthpiece, reed, ligature, etc. as well as saxophone repair). When I came out of a 7 year hiatus from playing, I created a special method for fast, efficient and thorough development of all aspects of playing saxophone in today's popular music world which has proven quite effective in helping musicians advance at an accelerated pace. Let me help you put yourself on the fast track to achieving your personal goals as a musician! Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Flute

I first picked up the flute in 1974. I have been studying consistently since then including going through the gifted and talented music program in high school and studying jazz studies in college. I've been performing professional in the greater Los Angeles since the early 1990s. I have taught private instruction on saxophone and flute to many students of all ages in the Santa Barbara and Los Angeles area for the past 15 years. I currently teach saxophone and flute at a local Sam Ash music store in the Los Angeles East side where I also host a weekly jazz jam and teach a weekly jazz improvisation class. I also teach privately in the Los Angeles West side area based out of West L.A.

Saxophone

I first picked up the saxophone in 1976. I studied consistently through high school and college including playing lead alto and the top jazz band at Florida State University in the mid-1980s. I have played saxophone professionally in the greater Los Angeles area since the early 1990s. I have taught private instruction on saxophone to a plethora of students both in Santa Barbara and in Los Angeles for over 15 years. I currently teach a host of saxophone and flute students at a Sam Ash music store on the Los Angeles east side, where I also host a weekly jazz jam session and teach a weekly jazz improvisation class. I also teach privately to students on the Los Angeles west side (West L.A.) . As well as focusing on the basics of saxophone playing such as tone production and technique my specialty is in Jazz studies and Jazz improvisation for saxophone.
