About Nicolas

I graduated from the University of California Santa Barbara. During my freshman year of high school, I started helping my peers understand math concepts. That is when I realized that not only did I have a knack for tutoring, but also, I enjoyed it. While at UCSB I worked as a math and physics tutor at the drop-in room for the Campus Learning Assistance Services. Since moving to Los Angeles over 3 years ago, I have been tutoring math, physics, English, SAT II math and physics, and ISEE for students of all ages and levels.

I earned my degree in English with a minor in physics. My diverse educational background allows me to tutor a range of subjects – from English and writing to math and physics.

I focus on helping our students arrive at the answer themselves, not just giving them the answer. I sharpen my students’ learning skills by helping them think through the problem on their own before I start guiding them toward the answer. This enhances the quality of the tutoring session. Additionally, I never rush through assignments with my students. My primary goal is to assure he or she comprehends the concepts.

No matter where a student is learning-wise, as long as he or she is willing to learn, improvement will follow.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I tutored students with ADD/ADHD one-on-one at the University of California Santa Barbara for 1 1/2 years. I tutored them in Physics and Math. I was very patient even when they got frustrated and discouraged and helped them understand the concepts.

Algebra 1

I have been tutoring students privately in algebra 1 for 6 years now. I focus on helping the student reach true comprehension of all the concepts necessary to learn the material. If a concept hasn't solidly been grasped by the student, I will take them back to it and help them understand it.

Algebra 2

I have been tutoring students privately in algebra 2 for 7 years now. I focus on helping the student reach true comprehension of all the concepts necessary to learn the material. If a concept hasn't solidly been grasped by the student, I will take them back to it and help them understand it.

Calculus

With a minor in physics from UCSB, I have been tutoring calculus (up to vector calculus) for 7 years now. I help students understand all the concepts in order to give them the confidence to excel in their calculus courses.

Differential Equations

I took Math at the University of California Santa Barbara up to Ordinary Differential Equations. I tutored students on Differential Equations for 1 1/2 years for the Campus Learning Assistance Services (CLAS) at UCSB. I helped students understand the concepts in their textbooks so that they could complete their homework and do well on the tests.

English

With my major in English from UCSB, I have been helping students of all ages and levels with English for the past 7 years. I help my students to read and write critically in order to gain the best possible understanding of the material.

Linear Algebra

I took Vector Calculus up to Differential Equations at the University of California Santa Barbara. I tutored students in linear algebra for 1 1/2 years for the Campus Learning Assistance Services (CLAS) at UCSB. I help students understand the concepts in their textbook so that they can complete their homework and do well on their tests.

Physics

With my minor in physics from UCSB, I have been tutoring physics students for 7 years. I focus on helping students fully understand the concepts in order to solve their homework problems on their own. This, in turn, helps them perform well on their tests.

Precalculus

With my math-heavy minor in physics from UCSB, I have been tutoring precalculus for the past 7 years. While the material may seem daunting to some of my students at first, I get them on a study plan to get them on track. I get them to think through the material as much as possible on their own so they gain the best understanding of the concepts.

Reading

I have been helping students of all ages with reading for the past 6 years. Increasing confidence in reading comes from going slow, making sure your student gets the basics (phonics) down, and giving he or she a chance to use their imagination to have fun with reading (books with pictures work well for this depending on his or her level). Reading is critical to learning and life, and I very much enjoy helping students learn this crucial skill.

SAT Math

With my math-heavy minor in physics from UCSB, I have been tutoring students in SAT Math for 3 years. I teach my students different tricks and test-taking strategies in order to help them get the best possible score on the SAT Math section. I assign regular timed practice tests for them to complete so that they get used to the timing and content of the test.

Trigonometry

I have been tutoring students in trigonometry for the past 3 years. I always make sure he or she has the basics down before moving on to the more complicated concepts in their class. Trigonometry can be tricky, but my students have a high success rate after our tutoring sessions together.
