About Carl

My aim is to motivate and prepare students for college and university advanced studies in music. As a former music major in college, I understand the requirements of this discipline. I have found that children are eager to learn, but non-exposure is the prevailing factor determining their current lack of development. Some simply need a clearer guideline from beginner to professional.

Few children, even young adults, are given any exposure to the concepts and processes of music composition. But once exposed, it's a different world. So this is what I'm trying to offer, "exposure from a composer." If they can actually see what the process is, the chance of success in college and beyond is much greater.

I can provide exposure to a higher art form. It's higher place to reach for mentally, but very rewarding. My method is very systematic. It's begins with the very, very simple and progresses through a series of defined links and leaps, where each level of instruction is a derived from previously learned material. This approach is the path from piano to full orchestra. It's the best way to grow your skills and your confidence.

I attended the following colleges: Morehouse College, Atlanta, GA; Grove School of Music, Studio City, CA; Los Angeles City College, Los Angeles CA. I have taught in public school, private school, charter school and also given in-home studies. I have composed/arranged music for film, TV, stage and recording. I love teaching music.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chess

I have been playing chess since college, where I really learned strategy. I have been a chess instructor with EduChess in Los Angeles. I also taught chess at Pilgrim private school. Though I'm not a chess master, I love the game and love teaching the young children the art of thoughtfulness.

Composition (Music)

I have studied music composition with the following composer: Dick Grove, Mundell Lowe, Roger Kellaway, Paul Lopez, Henry Mancini, Nick Perito, Duane Tatro, Claire Fischer, Sammy Nestico, Dr. Don Simpson and Dr. Woody James. I attended the following colleges: Morehouse College, Atlanta, GA;
Grove School of Music, Studio City, CA; Los Angeles City College, Los Angeles CA. I have taught in public school, private school, charter school and also given in-home studies. I have composed/arranged music for film, TV, stage and recording. I love teaching music.

Music Production

I produced the last album of the Olympics singing group, "Big City Christmas" in 2005. Most of the members have passed now, but the album will be remembered. I was staff engineer at the famed Kendun Studios in Burbank CA (built by Quincy Jones/Kent Duncan). Also staff engineer at George Tobin Studios (Motown producer) and produced Bob and Earl of Harlem Shuffle fame.

Music Theory

I have been teaching music theory to children and adults for over 30 years. I have been an instructor for music theory in private high schools, public schools, for the city of Los Angeles Recreation Centers and for the Los Angeles Public Library (Silver Lake branch). The study includes Baroque counterpoint to 20th Century composition.

Tennis

I have been playing tennis for over 10 years. I am currently helping to teach and drill children at a tennis academy. I am a current member of the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA).

Trumpet

The trumpet is my main instrument. I have over 30 years of experience playing. I have played in marching bands, concert bands, jazz band, orchestra and commercial pop bands. I have taught private lessons in the home of the student and high school band. You must have your own instrument.
