I love to teach the guitar and look forward to the opportunity to help others get on their way to making music. I have been playing the guitar for 25 years and teaching music for 20 years. I have developed my own charts, lesson materials, and a highly effective method of delivering the knowledge I have gained in simple language that is easily understood. I have studied with the best teachers in New Orleans, NY, and CA including Ray Brown, Steve Masakowski, and Ellis Marsalis. In addition to performing live in major club venues in NYC and New Orleans, I have produced my own CD, and was signed to a record label that distributed the music internationally. I have also recorded and performed with many top musicians, including Matisyahu for whom I recorded 4 tracks.
I offer customized music lessons designed focused toward achieving student's musical goals, while taking into consideration their current level of ability. I ensure that students will not only become proficient players, but that they also have an understanding of how the guitar works. I offer instruction for many aspects of music: rhythm, timing, chords, scales, chord progressions, soloing, reading music, composition, improvisation, song writing, instrument purchase consultation, instrument care, and more. If students want to organize their own groups for group lessons, my hourly rate does not change.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have played and owned my own drum kit for the last 10 years. I am able to participate in many different types of musical environments on a professional level. I have taught my own drum students in the past, and they have become very good drummers. I am familiar with many different styles, and as you can see from my music theory exam, I am familiar with time signatures and music notation pedagogy.
While studying Jazz Guitar at the University of New Orleans, I took extensive ear-training courses which were a required part of the curriculum of the program. I am able to identify all ascending and descending intervals by ear. When I taught high school last year, I taught all of my general music students how to identify intervals by recognizing common, or famous melodies from radio & TV.
I have been employed as a general music teacher in Bridgeport, CT for one school year. I have also been employed as an instrumental music teacher in NYC for one school year. In addition, I have my degrees in music performance, and music education. I have also maintained a private practice of students throughout the last 10 years.
I have been playing guitar for 25 years. I have taken private guitar lessons since I was 13 years old. I have a BA degree from the University of New Orleans Jazz Program in Jazz Guitar Performance. I am a professional musician, and had my first recording attempt signed and distributed by a major record label subsidiary.
In 2005, I was signed to a subsidiary of SONY for a recording that I produced, performed, and recorded completely by myself with exception to the drumming and horn playing. I am familiar with logic, and use it quite often to record. I also own a mixing board, and am familiar with all aspects of music production.
While studying jazz at the University of New Orleans, I also studied classical music theory for two full years. I am well versed in all aspects of music theory. I take pride in my ability to communicate complex musical ideas and concepts to beginners in simple language. Additionally, I received 100% on the WyzAnt music theory exam.
While studying jazz guitar at the University of New Orleans, I was obligated to take two years of jazz piano. I am familiar with scales, chord building, altered and extended voicings, bass lines, comping, reading music and more. I have taught my own private piano students, and they have become quite good pianists. I have developed my own personal methods that help students to coordinate their right and left hands together which has been very effective for me.
