Hello! My name is Stephanie, and I am a fully credentialed elementary and special education teacher recently retired from the classroom. I am looking to continue working with elementary-aged children in a smaller setting, especially those who have learning difficulties and ADHD types of issues.
I have a passion for teaching English and written language skills through the use of children's literature. My experiences are vast and span over 25 years as a classroom teacher and most recently a special educator at the high school level. Most of my work in the area of special education is teaching students on a one-to-one basis.
I live on the Westside of LA, and am able to travel up to 15 miles each way. I look forward to hearing from you should you have a need for my services. Letters of reference can be provided upon request.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a fully credentialed special educator with vast experience working with children with learning disabilities and ADD/ADHD. I have taught in many classrooms and also have a son who has ADD. I use a multi-modality approach in teaching my students, combining fun, exciting lessons to capture their attention and also provide a reward system for all successes. I only use positive rewards and am calm, easy going, and patient, and regularly use checking for understanding to make sure concepts are being mastered.
I am a fully certified special education teacher and have had many years of experience working with children with Asperger's. I use a variety of techniques and make sure to stimulate and engage them socially as well as academically. I find many of these students to be quite responsive when given one on one attention and I am diligent about using visual, auditory and kinesthetic approaches in my teaching to engage all aspects of the students intellect, as well as social-emotional skill sets.
The common core California state standards are what I use to plan my instructions and develop individualized academic content objectives for all of my students. They must show more than one way to solve a math problems, not just the traditional drill and solve. We need to model for our students how to use pictures and words to demonstrate mastery of a common core math standard, for example. Uses of reading for content and informational texts and writing with an audience or purpose in mind is always done in common core methodologies now.
I am an experienced special educator who has worked with children with reading disabilities for many years. I use a variery of approaches and a lot of childrens literature to engage and excite my students and help them overcome some of their fears and and anxieties when it comes to reading. I also use spelling and word games to make reading fun because for many students with dyslexia their processing disorders can be overwhelming and make learning very taxing. I use a great deal of token rewards and positive praise in my teaching of these students.
I am a fully credentialed elementary educator. I can tutor all aspects of the elementary curriculum and have a passion for using fun, exciting literature and games to motivate and excite my students to develop of love of learning. I design my own lesson plans and also feel it is critical to establish a dialogue with the parents to get their input on what they feel is their child's greatest area of need as well as their greatest areas of strength.
I use a variety of techniques to teacher phonics and decoding skills to my students. I use flashcards and word families, and lots of fun , motivating word games to teach children about letter sound, digraphs, and dipthongs. I use games such as scrabble and making words, to engage my students and provide constant praise and rewards for even the smallest of successes.
I teach reading using a multi modality approach. This means I use phonics, core literature, and games to strengthen a child's decoding skills which leads to more reading comprehension and in depth understanding of more advanced vocabulary, spelling, and grammatical/ written language skills.
I am a fully credentialed elementary and special educator. I have over 25 years's experience working with children with special needs. After retiring from being in the classroom, I am looking to use my experiences to work with children on a more individualized level. I write and decipher IEP's and work on meeting the individual's goals and objectives based on the IEP. I am well-versed in the IDEA and can also provide information to parents about how to proceed at the school level in obtaining services they fell are essential for their child's successes.
