About Amal

With over 9 years of teaching experience, I have taught Math, Chemistry, and Physics to students from a varied range of ages (middle school through graduate school), learning abilities, and backgrounds.

My experience includes being an instructor (Principles of Engineering Design) and research project mentor (tissue engineering) for Johns Hopkins' Center for Talented Youth; graduate teaching assistant (Chemistry - Atomic and Molecular Structure, Equilibria, Acids, and Bases) at UCLA, science script mentor (for quantitative physics) for the American Film Institute's Sloan program; undergraduate teaching assistant (Cell Biology and Intro to Biomedical Engineering) at the George Washington University; Math/Intro to Electrical Engineering/General Chemistry tutor with the GWU Tutoring Initiative; and Math tutor with study point and varsity tutors. I have also taught GRE Math, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus I, and General Chemistry quite extensively through Wyzant and other platforms.

I have a BS in Biomedical Engineering/Biophysics, a MS in Electrical Engineering and am currently working on a PhD degree in Biomedical Physics at UCLA.

I have taught the following topics in Math:
- Algebra I/II
- Pre-Calculus
- Calculus I/II (Single Variable Calculus)
- Calculus III (Multivariable Calculus)
- Trigonometry
- Geometry
- Linear Algebra
- Differential Equations
- Data Analysis & Intro Probability/Statistics
- SAT/SAT Subject/ACT/GRE/GMAT Quantitative (Math) Sections

I have often tutored the quantitative portion of standardized tests, so I am very experienced helping students prepare for that. I scored an 800/800 on both the SAT and GRE quantitative portions.

I have taught the following topics in Chemistry:
- Atomic structure
- Periodic Table
- Chemical Bonding
- Chemical reactions, Equations, Equilibrium, and Stoichiometry
- Acids & Bases (pH, titration, buffer solutions, etc.)
- Basic Thermodynamics
- Solutions & Mixtures

If you are having difficulties understanding new concepts in your science/engineering/math class or need help preparing for a standardized test, I am here to help. The first session typically involves an evaluation of your needs, skill set, and goals (including setting up an appropriate time schedule for our future meetings).

I have also extensively taught Arabic, both colloquial/Levantine and standard modern Arabic forms. I can help you practice your speaking, introducing new words and grammar rules and correcting your accent in the process. If you are more of a beginner, I can instead focus on teaching the alphabets, new words and their applications, and sentence structure. For beginners, I typically recommend using Arabic textbooks (such as al kitaab) for guidance.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Arabic

I am well qualified to tutor Arabic as it is my native language and I was born and raised in the United Arab Emirates. My experience with the Arabic language includes: (a) working as an Arabic Tour Director for State Department Arab delegates for 4 years, (b) being the president of the Arab Student Association for 2 years at the George Washington University, and (c) teaching State Dept personnel (in Washington, DC) and young adults (in Chicago, IL) speaking, reading, and writing (in Arabic).

Excellent — I didn't think I'd ever find someone that would have the ability and the patience to effectively help me understand Math again. Her kindness matches her intelligence. Which explains her choice of study. If there were a few more Amal's out there, I'm sure we would cure cancer, much much sooner. ...
