About Megan

No matter what you want to achieve, I'll coach you until you get there. We won't quit until you can say, "I DID IT!"

I hold a Ph.D. in clinical psychology - one of the most competitive kinds of graduate degree programs to get into! - and have years of experience with rigorous academic requirements.

My tutoring style is informed by a combined total of 10 years of experience with teaching, research, and counseling work, including:

Providing psychotherapy for children, families, college students, and adults.

Teaching psychology and research writing courses at the collegiate level.

Training nursing and medical students on how to motivate patients.

Counseling university students, re: career exploration, academic advising, and study skills coaching. I've helped students succeed who struggled with problems such as test anxiety, ADHD, learning disorders, and confusion about choosing a major or career path.

Because of my strong psychology background, I bring a unique understanding of and appreciation for the broad range of cultures, individual learning styles, and vocational possibilities that go into a learner's specific needs and aspirations. If we work together, I'll provide you with plenty of encouragement, patience, and opportunity for success.

In addition to specializing in multiple subjects, I also provide study skills training, career counseling, and help with college and graduate school applications. I work with students of all ages, and with all kinds of learning styles, including but not limited to: ADHD, test anxiety, and learning disabilities. Please contact me to discuss your (or your child's) academic goals and needs. I look forward to working together!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I earned a Ph.D. in clinical psychology in August 2011. As part of my doctorate program requirements, I worked in community mental health clinics, university counseling centers, and private practices where I provided both psychotherapy and comprehensive assessments for children and adults with various problems. These problems included ADHD, as well as issues that commonly accompany it, such as problems with social functioning, school behavior, anxiety, and depression. I have worked with such patients both one-on-one and in groups. One of the groups I co-conducted was a psychoeducational intervention for college students with ADHD, learning disorders, and other problems affecting academic functioning. In this group, I worked with the students on improving study skills, planning, time management, organization, etc. Finally, I also have experience working in a private practice that offered biofeedback therapy, neurofeedback therapy, and both individual and family psychotherapy for children and teens with ADHD (as well as other problems).

Within my field of clinical psychology, I chose to specialize in health. For the past several years, I have worked alongside physicians and other healthcare professionals to provide assessments and brief interventions to patients with psychological disorders that may present as physical illnesses. Alongside this, I have recently completed all requirements to be Board Certified in Biofeedback by the International Alliance in bio- and neuro-feedback therapies. Earlier in my cultivation of a health psychology subspecialty, I took and excelled in numerous courses (both undergraduate and graduate) in the biological, biopsychological, neurobiological sciences. During college, my official major was called "Psychology - Biological and Evolutionary Science Option," and my doctoral dissertation was on chronic pain.

College Counseling

I worked as a career counselor & academic adviser for 1 yr in the psychology department during grad school. Within the last 7 years, I've worked with college students for a combined total of 3 years, in university counseling centers as well as community mental health clinics, providing psychotherapy and intellectual assessment for problems including career exploration, academic difficulty, ADHD, learning disability, test anxiety, etc. I was an instructor of undergraduate psychology courses for 6 semesters during 2005-2008. I am familiar with local universities, as my predoctoral, full-time clinical internship was at UCLA Counseling & Psychological Services during 2009-2010.

Study Skills

During graduate school, I worked in the student counseling centers at two different major universities, including UCLA, where I worked full-time for a year as a predoctoral psychology intern. As a therapist in both of these university settings, I helped countless students improve their study skills, and thus, their grades and academic confidence. I worked with students both one-on-one as well as in groups. We focused on building skills in organization, goal-setting, time-management, efficiency, and stress management. I have found that teaching students how to apply the popular technique of "SMART" (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, & Timely) goal-setting can help unlock academic potential they never knew they had.
