I've been producing for over 20 years, and am now also teaching at USC in the Cinema Studies department. Working with students on their projects and essays is one of my areas of expertise. This is often about finding the specific goal of the assignment, refining the message the student wants to communicate and clarifying how best to do that. I enjoy helping students grow their initial ideas into fully formed assignments.
If you're a screenwriter, I'm can be particularly helpful. I've developed scripts with veteran writers and beginners, and everyone in between. My goal is always to help the writer create the best version of the screenplay they want to write. It's easy for writers to get distracted from their initial impulse as they begin to execute. Getting back to that initial impulse is often the key to finding the strongest voice for the writing, bringing characters fully to life and making the right decisions on structure.
As an active producer putting projects together in the international and US marketplace, I have a day-to-day insight into what works for the marketplace, at what budget level and for what audience. Having a perspective and insight into this from the writing stage can help a screenplay realize its potential and navigate its way into production. Writing what you want and writing something that can get made are completely compatible. You just need the right input to realize both goals. I can help guide you there. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I'm an independent producer, based in Los Angeles, and working internationally. The most important aspect of producing is making sure that the screenplay you're working with is in it's best possible shape. All future activity comes from the quality of the screenplay. I attach directors, actors and financing all based on how effective the screenplay is. For over 20 years, I've been working very closely with writers in a professional capacity on their screenplays. I've worked with brand new writers, and very experienced writers. I know how to find out from the writer what they're trying to achieve, and how to actualize the best version of that. A thorough knowledge of the market place at any given time, and the principals of how drama works, are the two pillars of creating an effective and successful screenplay. The writers I've worked with are very happy with the results.
