About Ian

I'm a working artist, illustrator and college lecturer with advanced skills in digital and traditional studio art and a rich background in art history and theory. I have taught at the college level for over 10 years, working with aspiring graphic artists, costume designers, and art directors as well as bio majors, engineers and business students.

I work hard to make the skills and concepts of art and design accessible to every student I work with, from beginners to seasoned pros. Whether your goal is to master Photoshop, gain confidence in drawing, or get more out of a tough art history class, I can provide the clarity, context and expertise to help you succeed.

I take real pride in my student's development, and have repeatedly received glowing evaluations as an instructor.

Areas of special expertise include:

• Traditional drawing and painting, including the human figure, perspective
• Color theory
• Concepts in graphic design inlcuding composition, layout and typography
Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Illustrator (a personal favorite!)
• 19th and 20th century art history
• Contemporary art practice and critical theory
• Inside knowledge of LA's art galleries and museums

If it sounds like my background might meet your academic needs, I'd love to hear from you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe Illustrator

I'm a working artist who uses Illustrator extensively for graphic design and illustration.

My Adobe Illustrator skills include (but are by no means limited to):

• Converting hand-drawn sketches into paths
• Applying color and gradients
• Working with clipping masks
• Using Pathfinder options to create clean, sleek geometric shapes
• Eye-catching light and color effects using the Transparency menu
• Complex patterns such as paisleys and plaids
• Formatting files for web and print
• Typography
• Sketching in illustrator using the Wacom tablet
• Creating "antique" and "grunge" effects for vector graphics

I have my own laptop and am happy to travel.

Drawing

I hold a BFA in sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design, an MFA in studio art from UC San Diego, and I am an alumnus of the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. I have taught painting and drawing to both undergraduate and graduate students at UC Irvine, UC San Diego and the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. My work has been exhibited throughout California and internationally, and has been acquired by the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego and the UCLA Hammer Museum.

Film

As a graduate student, I worked as a teaching assistant to professor Jean Pierre Gorin, a prominent figure in French New Wave and a former collaborator of Jean Luque Goddard. As a TA I ran discussion sections and graded papers for some of Gorin's most popular courses, including the Director Series and Hard Look at the Movies. Course topics included formal approaches to film criticism, supported with classic texts by Manny Farber and other film theorists.
