University California Los Angeles (Gender Studies)
Hello my name is Mercedes and I am really excited to tell you a little about myself as an instructor/tutor. I am a graduate of both UCLA and West Los Angeles College in Social and Behavioral Sciences & Gender Studies (emphasis in Psychology/Child Development). I have over 15 years of direct experience in education with students of all ages. I have tutored reading and writing as well as ESL. I facilitated special events and play activities for summer programs and mentor-ships. I have also worked as a college preparatory adviser/mentor. When creating workshops and materials for classes, I use my knowledge of basic computer programs to enhance my instruction with PowerPoint presentations, MS Publisher for calendars and much more. Most recently I have worked as an instructor at a international school in Brazil with students learning English as a second language. I like to follow a Reggio Emilia and Montessori approach to teaching and learning, drawing on the interests and learning style of the student to lead instruction/curriculum. I use a variety of materials/manipulatives to engage the student and to facilitate exploration of new information and expanding on existing ideas. I am patient and flexible. I am looking forward to having fun while learning. Thank you for your interest. See you soon! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have worked for UCLA's Center for Community College Partnerships as a Transfer Adviser/Peer Mentor. UCLA CCCP works to increase transfer rates and success of under served community college populations by equipping students with skills and knowledge of available transfer pathways. CCCP also works closely with community college and sometimes high school administrators, faculty, and staff to
improve students’ academic preparedness and competitiveness for admission to the university.
I have a degrees in Gender Studies with emphasis in psychology and behavioral/Social Sciences from UCLA/WestLA. I have worked as a pre school teacher in Latin America teaching language arts and other relevant areas at an international school. There I also tutored adults in language arts, culture appreciation and English fluency.
I worked with pre-K and Kindergarten English Language Learners at the Pan American School of Bahia in Brazil. I help student using the whole language approach to decode new written words by sounding them out and learning the sound and name of each letter. This is especially helpful with high frequency/site words and beginning reading. I also helped students with enunciation of English words, vowel and syllable recognition.
