UC Berkeley (English Literature)
Education is a passion of mine - there are few things in this world that I love more than seeing the face of someone who "gets it," the moment they "get it." But education is far more than what you learn in a classroom; a real education is something that must always be continued and practiced, learned and shared.
Whether it be one-on-one or in small group sessions, education involves practice and engagement, as well as discussion and critical thinking. I always push my students beyond standard expectations: when you work with me, the bar will be set high, but I am confident that, together, we will reach it.
Now, a little bit about myself: My name is Andrew and I am a certified English teacher in Miami-Dade. I recently graduated from UC Berkeley with a B.A. in both Rhetoric and English Literature. At UC Berkeley, I wrote a senior honors thesis on the films of David Lynch and can help with good research practices. I also wrote for a variety of newspapers and as a travel writer, so I am very comfortable when it comes to relaying concepts clearly and concisely. I feel comfortable teaching all of the following areas: Reading, Writing, Test Prep, Journalism, Creative Writing (Nonfiction and fiction prose and poetry), Research, and anything else that requires critical thinking. I feel comfortable teaching all skill levels, and look forward to working with you! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have played basketball since I was 10 years old, and continue to play recreationally 3 times a week. In high school, I played on the junior varsity team, and continued playing in UC Berkeley's intramural league for four years. I am a student of the game, and understand various motion offenses. During my summer breaks in college, I sometimes coached youth basketball in my hometown of Huntington Beach, CA. I believe that in order to excel at the sport, one needs to understand fundamentals. This means that I would work extensively on dribbling and passing, conditioning, and shooting form. I believe that the best way to practice form is by taking repeatedly taking high percentage shots focusing on arm placement and movement to build muscle memory. When it comes to dribbling, simple crossover and ball-protection dribbling are necessary to ensure good ball handling. I love the sport, and love to relay my love of the sport to anyone who will listen!

Proper grammar is a must in order to be taken seriously! I firmly believe in the power of a well-worded, properly constructed sentence, and believe that this is an area where I can provide a lot of clarity for you. My background is in English Literature and Rhetoric from UC Berkeley, and I am currently a certified high school English teacher in Miami-Dade. I love grammar, and I love making the process of learning grammar fun, and at the very least, interesting.
I have played guitar since I was 12, and am now 23. I understand basic scales and tablature, and am comfortable teaching chord charts as well. Furthermore, I frequently use and can teach various alternative tunings used for various styles (bluegrass, slide, etc.). Above all, I believe that learning the guitar needs to happen organically: I will teach students songs they want to learn, but would focus more on theory and technique so students can develop their own ear and creative senses.
I love reading, and I love teaching other people about reading. My background is in English Literature and Rhetoric from UC Berkeley, so I have extensive experience reading across genres. I am currently a certified high school English teacher in Miami-Dade, and love to tailor my class to the interests of my students. When we work together, I will do the same! I truly believe that being a strong reader puts your miles ahead of the pack, and I would love the opportunity to work with you this summer on increasing your reading strength!
I am qualified to help you with proofreading for a variety of reasons: as a high school English teacher in Miami-Dade, I've taught my students the proofreading process from start to finish, and feel confident in helping you learn that process as well. As an editor and writer throughout college and beyond, I practice what I preach, so that means I teach you what I know to be the most efficient way to proofread. My background is in English Literature and Rhetoric from UC Berkeley, so writing papers was my life throughout university. We will work on what it means to proofread vs. edit, and will work together on whatever projects you need to complete!
As a teacher, public speaking is a must-have skill. I understand the fear that some might have getting up in front of an audience, and I understand how proper preparation goes a long way in dispelling that fear. In high school and college, I was an active member of Model United Nations, which requires participants to make policy speeches in front of audiences as large as 200 people. Furthermore, in college, I taught Model United Nations to local high school students as a volunteer, where I stressed to need for eye contact with few reading aids while giving the speech. I also teach posture and proper pronunciation as a means to effectively communicating your ideas. My background in Rhetoric (I majored in Rhetoric) also plays into my knowledge of how to properly express ideas publicly.
At UC Berkeley I studied English and Rhetoric, which is essentially saying that I read. A lot. I am currently a 10th grade English teacher in Miami-Dade, and understand the importance of interesting exercises and articles to help you become a better reader, but also to make sure you are interested in what you are studying. When we work together, I will make sure to tailor our exercises to your interests and unique need so that you get the most out of your time with me.
SAT Reading need not be as daunting as some might think. I will work with students on common question stems, and to make sure that students understand what the question is asking. I firmly believe that understanding the test is most of the battle with the SAT, and we will take time to understand exactly what the SAT is designed to test you on and how you can be best prepared for the test. My background in English Literature and Rhetoric is particularly useful here, as critical thinking is what I studied at UC Berkeley, and in short, that is what the SAT Reading section is testing you on. I am currently a certified English teacher in Miami-Dade, so I am up-to-date on the most effective test-prep strategies!

While the SAT can inspire fear, it need not! The writing section is coachable, and together, we will work to increase your score by improving writing conventions, faster reading, and familiarity with the types of questions you are being asked.
I have been involved in many musical endeavors since learning the guitar at age 12 (I am now 23). I have a fine ear for various genres, including folk, bluegrass, pop, R&B, blues, and jazz. Furthermore, I understand the personal nature of songwriting and work to make sure that the creator's original intent is maintained. I can tutor in the area of songwriting because I am willing to sit with a student and deeply understand their aims and goals with a particular piece of music. As far as teaching methods go, I believe that songwriting can best be learned by a mix of trial-and-error and studying various songwriters. We will practice by dissecting the songs of various artists across genres to expose the student to a variety of techniques, and then work on original material in genre-specific assignments. Students will practice using the "rules" of songwriting — hook, verse, chorus, bridge — before they can go about breaking them in free form songwriting. I recently graduated from UC Berkeley with a B.A. in both Rhetoric and English Literature.
I have a background in Rhetoric and English Literature from UC Berkeley. As a Rhetoric student, part of the program was studying speech and speech patterns. I understand the nuances of proper speaking techniques and know how to relay those techniques. Furthermore, I also work with native Arabic and Spanish speakers editing their business proposals and helping them better understand how to deliver the English language. My emphasis is on conversational English, and teaching them the idiosyncrasies of a sometimes difficult language. I am confident that I can help others with their speech!
I believe that I am qualified to help someone develop study skills because I preach discipline in my teaching. I will tutor the student in time-management and scheduling, as well as how to prioritize various assignments and commitments. We will go over an array of study habits such as read and annotate, note cards, various forms of note-taking (outline, Princeton, etc.), and work on setting aside a chunk of time that is devoted purely to academic endeavors.
I played volleyball throughout high school in Huntington Beach, CA and continue to play recreationally on the beach and at my community gym. I also currently coach the boys and girls volleyball teams at the high school where I teach, Miami Edison Senior, and feel very comfortable training beginners and experts alike. Volleyball is a game of finesse, and as such, repetition is necessary to teach the required skills to be successful. I understand rotations very well, and understand all of the positions. When it comes to volleyball, thorough foot-work is needed, and because of this, I stress proper form throughout my practices. I am comfortable on the beach, teaching doubles, or in a gym teaching volleyball as a team sport.

I am also a certified high school English teacher in Miami-Dade, where I teach analytical and creative writing through my English Language Arts class. I will help you with your form, conventions, voice, and delivery across genres.
