Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

Teaching American History is teaching students the story of America and their role in their country. When teaching American History, I always review important dates, figures, along with concepts and themes.

English

Teaching English is teaching students to combine their notions and responses of a text with their knowledge of reading, grammar, and vocabulary. When teaching English, there will be equal emphasis on technique, comprehension and craft.

Grammar

As a Creative Writing major, I have studied grammar extensively in order to better communicate with the written word. When teaching grammar, I will use the students past writing as a base and build upon from there. Constant writing, quizzing, and practice will ensure that students are able to understand grammatical rules and place them into practice.

Literature

In order to understand Literature, students must understand the relevancy of the work to themselves. As a Creative Writing Major, comprehending text is important, but it is the work of well written Literature to create a response within a reader. In order to better teach Literature, I will stimulate the existing responses students have with the piece. It is also important to teach students how to create a personal relationship with the text to better understand plot, characters, and themes.

Reading

In reading, I focus on sentence deconstruction and themes. In order for students to become better readers, there will be an emphasis on close reading and annotation.

Spanish

I am a native speaker in Spanish and have practiced the language my entire life. When teaching Spanish, the lessons will concentrate on the fundamentals of Spanish through conversation. Their will also be focus on reading and writing through a language exchange journal.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary is essential for any good writer and it is also essential in life. Vocabulary will be practiced and enhanced through constant exercise along with reading strategies to identify words that are unfamiliar and utilizing them in conversation.

World History

As a History minor, it is necessary to attend classes with an emphasis on a global historical perspective. When teaching World History, I use comparative techniques so that students may better grasp their own point of view of a subject and the global view. Dates, topics, and important figures will all be taught in relevance to the themes and concepts an event is evident of.

Writing

At the Creative Writing Department at UCR, it is a student's prerogative to attempt to convey thoughts, ideas, and emotions accurately through the writing. I have also published several small works in local school anthologies and have won the Herp Albert Emerging Young Artist Award for my writing in 2010. When teaching writing, I focus on thesis, evidence, and transitions.
