I studied elementary education in college, and part of my classwork meant being in local elementary schools working directly with teachers and students. I was trained by the teachers in ways to effectively help teach the students, and I then applied those lessons directly to the kids in the classroom. In the summers I worked as a summer camp director, where, in addition to tutoring, I dealt with campers' personal problems, from homesickness to teasing to bed wetting. Other responsibilities included organizing and overseeing activities for hundreds of campers, ages 8 to 15.
I work as a freelance writer/producer, which leaves my hours open and flexible. I'm personable and friendly and I love working with others. I very much enjoy working with kids and I'm confident that I'll find a way to connect with your child so that he or she can get what's needed out of tutoring sessions. Growing up, when I was a student, my parents hired tutors to help my sister and me, so I understand the dynamic from both ends. I pride myself on being reliable and punctual, and if you hire me I will be the last person to leave you hanging on a job.
Thank you so much for your time and consideration. I look forward to helping you and your child! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I played basketball for years growing up and began coaching youth basketball as a high school student. I coached for four years and was given the Volunteer of the Year award for my work. I have also worked as a camp counselor, where I often coached, taught, and refereed basketball. I know the game thoroughly and can teach specific skills as well as larger concepts that help players better understand basketball.
I work professionally as a writer/producer, and have served as Executive Producer on projects ranging from ultra-low budget Internet shoots to higher budget TV shows and presentation pilots. Most recently I wrote and produced a series called Assassin Banana that stars Nathan Fillion and Scarlett Johansson; I'm currently pitching the show for sale. I understand all elements of production, from development (I worked in feature film and television development for years) to holding auditions all the way down the post-production line. I have also given film students their first on-set opportunities with jobs from PA work to camera department responsibilities.
