I have been teaching English since 1978, first in a tutoring school on the Greek island of Crete, then, for 12 years, at the prestigious Anatolia College, an American-owned prep school in northern Greece, where I also directed the school Drama Club. Students who graduated from there went on to major colleges and universities in the US, including Harvard and UCLA.
Upon returning to America, I became a certified Adult ESL teacher within the LAUSD system, where I have been teaching since 1998. I have taught at all levels from Literacy to High Intermediate while also helping students prepare for their GED exams. In addition, I have been giving private lessons in SAT and TOEFL preparations.
I have published eight books, mostly about Greece, including a memoir, "The Summer of My Greek Taverna," which has recently been optioned for the movies. But, as an old saying in the writing business goes, "Never give up your day job!" Besides, I love teaching English, especially grammar. I will take two students for the price of one. For English grammar and test preparation (SAT, TOEFL & GED), I charge $45 an hour; for writing papers, $60 an hour.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I began teaching TOEFL in Greece in 1980 and have continued to do so ever since. My students in Greece were high school students preparing to go to college in the U.S. Here in L.A., my students have been adults hoping to apply for various diplomas at a professional level.
