About Paul

I am a freelance photographer/videographer and trivia nerd who enjoys teaching people that are interested in the world around them. Regarding my photography, I have run my own business for 2 1/2 years and have had shows throughout the Los Angeles area. I have taken classes for many years and would be happy to show my work upon request.

I have no problems teaching older people how to use Macintosh computers and have been described as frustration-free in those circumstances. Regarding basic Mac computer skills, I have worked at web compaines in the past and have no problems. I also know Photoshop very well--I use it very day! Also, I have taught small business owners how to use Photoshop, and have been highly recommended.

My English and writing skills are formidable. I was an English Major with a minor in Shakespeare, so I have studied both writing and literature intensely. Grammar is an interest of mine. I definitely can help you with your English skills. As long as you can understand what I say, you will see progress in your work. I am a published writer also, with articles appearing in magazines around the Los Angeles area.

I am a firm believer that everyone should know the basics, no matter what they do, and that you should know everything backwards and forwards before you progress.

I also like to keep things light--intensity discourages learning, although I expect my students to work hard and perform as well as they can.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe Photoshop

I have worked as a photographer for a number of years and so I am proficient in Photoshop.

English

My qualifications for teaching English are substantial, and I believe that I can help you or your child excel. I teach High School English at a number of charter schools in the LA area, so I am familiar with common difficulties that students face when learning English.

I am a published writer with a degree in English Writing, so I am very familiar with the language, and know its idiosyncrasies.

However, my most important qualification for teaching English is that I enjoy teaching and the subject. I can make studying English fun as well as rewarding!

Photography

I have been a professional photographer for a number of years, and have an on-line portfolio. I would like to tutor adults in still photography.

Please note that I am conversant in nearly all forms of still photography. My nature images have been featured in national art shows, I shoot professional portraiture as well as local events.

Reading

I am a published writer and continue to write as a hobby in my spare time. I also teach high school English at a number of charter schools in the LA area, so I am familiar with common difficulties that students face when learning.

However, my most important qualification for training children in reading is that I enjoy reading. After my lessons, I am sure that your children will enjoy reading as well!

Video Production

I have been producing basic videos for over 20 years and am very familiar with the process of camera, editing and story.

Currently, I am editing a documentary ultimately for the United States Government, have gotten grants from the NEA for video production, and have produced videos for a major motion picture studio. I also have had a writing agent in the past and have had reads at major production companies.
