I have sung professionally in New York and Los Angeles, and presently perform with three well-known choirs in the LA area: Vox Femina of Los Angeles, Canterbury Choir at All Saints Church Pasadena, and the Gregorian Schola. I have taught and coached in both cities, and work best with beginning singers. I can teach music fundamentals to anyone from middle school age to adults.
I believe a relaxed and humorous approach to any kind of learning works best, but I will invest my energy and expertise in my students, and hope that my students would be serious in their approach.
I live on the West Side, but will travel to Pasadena or an equivalent distance. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am fully competent to teach a course in music history and/or music appreciation. Frequently the two subjects are linked. I can teach students from middle school age up through adult. I have a BA in Music from Queens College, CUNY and over 30 years as a professional singer and coach in New York City and in Los Angeles. I presently sing with Vox Femina of Los Angeles, Canterbury Choir at All Saints Church-Pasadena, and the Gregorian Schola.
I have edited organizational newsletters as the Editor-in-Chief for Sisters in Crime/LA, and Mysterious Women. I am presently on the staff of the newsletter of Vox Femina Los Angeles. I have done editing for content, as well as copy editing and am very well-versed in grammar, as well as punctuation and spelling.
I am competent to teach a survey course of American and English literature. This course would start around 1750 and would cover the major novelists and poets of the late 18th through the early 20th Centuries.
I have been a legal word processor for over 30 years. While I lived in New York, and here in Los Angeles I taught word processing starting in the Wang era, through WordPerfect and into Word.
I can draw on 30+ years as a singer to include dealing with nerves, how to animate your presentation, and how to involve your audience. I presently teach a seminar to teach authors how to effectively read their own work in public settings, i.e. panels. I have taught this seminar for Sisters in Crime/LA.
My years as an avid reader, writer and editor have given me an excellent working knowledge of vocabulary and spelling.
I have been singing professionally for over 30 years, and prefer to work with beginning singers. I will teach basic vocal skills-e.g. proper breath preparation, voice placement, enunciation-which are applicable to multiple types of singing from classical to pop. I am also very familiar with the type(s) of songs appropriate to the abilities of beginning singers.
I have over 15 years of experience editing professional newsletters (law firms, literary and musical organizations), creating public relations material and website content. I am expert in spelling, grammar, punctuation, syntax and usage.
