About Sharon

I have sung professionally in New York and Los Angeles, and presently perform with three well-known choirs in the LA area: Vox Femina of Los Angeles, Canterbury Choir at All Saints Church Pasadena, and the Gregorian Schola. I have taught and coached in both cities, and work best with beginning singers. I can teach music fundamentals to anyone from middle school age to adults.

I believe a relaxed and humorous approach to any kind of learning works best, but I will invest my energy and expertise in my students, and hope that my students would be serious in their approach.

I live on the West Side, but will travel to Pasadena or an equivalent distance.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

General Music

I am fully competent to teach a course in music history and/or music appreciation. Frequently the two subjects are linked. I can teach students from middle school age up through adult. I have a BA in Music from Queens College, CUNY and over 30 years as a professional singer and coach in New York City and in Los Angeles. I presently sing with Vox Femina of Los Angeles, Canterbury Choir at All Saints Church-Pasadena, and the Gregorian Schola.

Grammar

I have edited organizational newsletters as the Editor-in-Chief for Sisters in Crime/LA, and Mysterious Women. I am presently on the staff of the newsletter of Vox Femina Los Angeles. I have done editing for content, as well as copy editing and am very well-versed in grammar, as well as punctuation and spelling.

Literature

I am competent to teach a survey course of American and English literature. This course would start around 1750 and would cover the major novelists and poets of the late 18th through the early 20th Centuries.

Microsoft Word

I have been a legal word processor for over 30 years. While I lived in New York, and here in Los Angeles I taught word processing starting in the Wang era, through WordPerfect and into Word.

Public Speaking

I can draw on 30+ years as a singer to include dealing with nerves, how to animate your presentation, and how to involve your audience. I presently teach a seminar to teach authors how to effectively read their own work in public settings, i.e. panels. I have taught this seminar for Sisters in Crime/LA.

Vocabulary

My years as an avid reader, writer and editor have given me an excellent working knowledge of vocabulary and spelling.

Voice (Music)

I have been singing professionally for over 30 years, and prefer to work with beginning singers. I will teach basic vocal skills-e.g. proper breath preparation, voice placement, enunciation-which are applicable to multiple types of singing from classical to pop. I am also very familiar with the type(s) of songs appropriate to the abilities of beginning singers.

Writing

I have over 15 years of experience editing professional newsletters (law firms, literary and musical organizations), creating public relations material and website content. I am expert in spelling, grammar, punctuation, syntax and usage.
