Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I studied extensively in the English department at Northwestern University, so ACT English is one of my strongest subjects. As a tutor, I focus on reading comprehension as well as test-taking strategies. My goal is to prepare students with both knowledge and confidence in their ability.

ACT Reading

The Reading section is a specialty of mine for ACT prep. I have extensive experience in critical reading through my courses at Northwestern University. As a tutor, I plan study sessions on a case-by-case basis depending on a student's individual needs.

ACT Science

Though my university degree is in an English-related field, science was always a strong subject for me throughout high school, and I completed a number of high level courses. My goal as a tutor for this portion of the exam is consistency and confidence, in addition to factual knowledge. My primary method is to teach students how to assess the information presented on a question-by-question basis, using logical strategies such as process of elimination.

American History

I completed AP U.S. History during high school, and at Northwestern University, I completed several courses in the history department, including history of the Vietnam War. I enjoy reading independently on the topic, and I consider myself to have a strong enough grasp to confidently tutor students in American History.

Elementary Math

Math was a favorite subject of mine all through my school career, and I consider myself highly qualified to tutor at the elementary level. My goal is to not simply correct mistakes, but help students gain an understanding of the basic principles and an overall confidence in the subject.

English

As a lifelong reader and writer, English is a subject I've always excelled in. I completed AP Language and AP Literature in high school and continued my study at Northwestern University through multiple English department courses, receiving a minor in Creative Writing. I have previously tutored in the subject, an experience I found highly rewarding.

Literature

I took numerous literature classes at Northwestern University and received a minor in Creative Writing. I previously tutored through my school's writing center and found the experience very rewarding. I can help with proofreading or outlining essay assignments and with analyzing texts.

Proofreading

As someone who has read and written at an excelled level my whole life, proofreading comes naturally to me. I am patient, detail oriented, and able to adjust my teaching style to fit varied needs. When I tutor a student, my aim is to "teach them to fish," so to speak: instead of simply correcting errors, I explain the reasoning behind the rules and teach techniques that students can learn to apply themselves, deepening their understanding and boosting their confidence in the subject.

Reading

As someone who has cultivated an in-depth knowledge and lifelong love of reading, I consider myself highly qualified to tutor in this area. I truly enjoy helping students of all levels improve their skills and grow more confident in their ability to comprehend and tackle assignments. My goal as a tutor is to instill a passion for reading that will benefit the student for years to come!

SAT Reading

When I took SAT I received an 800 in the Critical Reading section.

SAT Writing

My goal is to teach reliable techniques that will help students approach the SAT writing section with confidence. I hold a writing-focused degree from Northwestern University.

Vocabulary

My approach to vocabulary is to focus on contextual usage rather than rote drilling. When I tutor, I like to vary my methods as often as needed to keep the student interested and engaged. I have always found that reading new words or using them to tell a story are both more fun and more effective than simple memorization. My goal is always to impart a thorough understanding that students will retain long after taking their test.

Writing

Writing is a specialty of mine. Speaking to my own experience, it's a skill I've honed through years of high level courses, and recently I graduated from Northwestern University with a writing-focused Film major and a minor in Creative Writing. I also have particular experience as a writing center tutor, a job I found highly rewarding. I take pride in being able to help my students more clearly express themselves, and in teaching practical skills and techniques that will benefit them for years to come.
