About Jan

Greetings! I am an excellent tutor with the best qualifications to teach you English and all aspects of the English language.
I have tutored professionals, students and children from all over the world.
Some of the countries my students have come from include: China, Indonesia, Korea, Italy, Africa, Thailand, the Ukraine, Russia, the United States of America, Iran, Egypt and South America.
I am an expert at teaching the TOEFL and I tailor the lessons for my students according to their individual learning style and their aptitude for retention of the material.
I also challenge my students to push themselves in areas that they need to improve in.
Most students meet with me several times a week, although for those with a particular project or essay, only one session has proved necessary in order for them to meet their goal.
I enjoy challenging my students and receive a sense of satisfaction from watching them achieve.
Each lesson is designed to fit the individual student’s needs.
Some of the projects I have helped my students complete include:
*For medical doctors: preparation for their presentations and papers
*Nurses: corrected academic papers, a Master’s thesis, as well as proofreading and editing their essays and Power Point presentations
*Helping university and college students (USC, UCLA, SMC, and WLAC) with essays and creativity, building confidence with test preparation techniques for exams, improving conversational English for job interviews, proofreading, editing and giving a critique on essays and presentations
You will be encouraged by my teaching style and I am always open to hear your feedback.
I want my students to accomplish their goals and I am proud of their achievements.
I hope to meet with you and speak with you soon.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

An ESL student from Turkey shared:
It was really satisfying studying with Jan. In each lesson, she brings different things to work on. Once you tell her your interests, she finds articles/stories/dialogues based on your interests and always keeps you interested in the lesson. She also puts a great deal of importance on vocabulary - which is really important when you are learning a new language - and always remembers the words from recent lessons and checks you on those words. It was nice to meet a teacher like her.

Flute

I know how to read music.
The essentials - scales and proper breathing techniques are simple to teach.
I played flute in both high school and university.

Microsoft Outlook

I have used Microsoft Outlook in business settings both at Bank of America and UCLA. This included starting Outlook, navigating Outlook, and setting up an E-mail account. I also viewed, read and responded to emails on a daily basis. During these opportunities I also managed contact information, tasks, scheduled appointments and worked with the calendar.

Public Speaking

At USC, in several of my Communication classes, (as a student) it was required to stand before the class and make a speech.
I did an excellent job!
Also, I have been a speaker at different conferences. I stood in front of audiences ranging from a few people to hundreds of people.
As I am always very prepared and poised, my confidence comes through in public speaking.
All my talks are met with applause.

SAT Reading

A current student stated after I tutored him, "I see the SAT reading and writing sections in a whole new light."

Series 63

I held both 6 & 63 licenses. 63 - Uniform Securities Agent State Law. The 63 securities license entitles the holder to solicit orders for any type of security in a particular state. I have worked in the financial industry for over seven years (Associated Securities Corp., Financial Network, Interfirst Capital, and Merrill Lynch/Bank of America).

Study Skills

Regarding "Study Skills" - learning should be fun!
I successfully used many study skills from memory devices to flash cards. (It depends on the subject).
I always passed my courses with flying colors.

Video Production

As a part of my college career I was given the opportunity to produce, host and direct television programs.
These programs originally aired on public access.
I have knowledge of producing programs from inception to completion.

Great teacher — I found that Jan's lessons and teaching style were very helpful for me. I really liked to study English with her because it was always a mix of fun and education. I really wanted to improve my conversational skills and Jan brought up many interesting topics for our discussions. On a personal level, I've noticed some changes that happened; I have started to talk better and I am less afraid of talki ...
